Are we traveling & questions re: green pass vs CDC card

I got on today wondering if the intrepid travelers I know from Fodors are indeed traveling and it looks like a resounding YES! I have flights booked (Delta DC- ATL, ATL to Rome & returning FCO to JFK to DC) the first week of October. I'm a little nervous but I see that many of you guys are planning Sept/October trips. Happy to see that and hopeful we can all make our trips.

I'm an American & am working through what I need to do to get in & out (as of today - Aug 17) understanding things may change.

I think I am set on getting out - I need a negative Covid test within 3 days of flying, I need my CDC card and I need to fill out that passenger locator form. Can we use our CDC cards instead of the Covid Green Pass in Italy? Are our CDC cards accepted to get into museums, restaurants, etc.? Some places do not make that clear.

Coming back I need a negative Covid test within 3 days of flying, and my CDC card. Would love to know how everyone's experiences are going, and the answer to my CDC card questions. Thanks in advance and happy travels!

You only need your CDC card for entry into museums, restaurants etc. The Green pass is only for people from the EU or Schengen. You do not need a test to enter Italy if you are fully vaccinated. You do need a test to re enter the United States. Here is a article: https://www.thelocal.it/20210805/her...om-august-6th/. Have a great time.

The Local had a recent survey that suggested some restaurants, fearing large fines, were not allowing those without official green passes to enter. We travel to Rome on Sunday and are prepared to do a lot of outside dining, just in case. Things may change by the time you go, with the possibility of your being able to get a green pass, which some non-Eu people are now able to get in France. Or, in this fast changing environment, the global Covid situation might make things more or less stringent. Here are excerpts from the Local about recent experiences:"From Sicily to Veneto, people have reported being turned away at bars, cafes, museums and more despite having proof of vaccination issued by an approved non-EU country.

Vincent Castro from the US said, “I am stationed in Naples with the navy and had trouble with local restaurants and Ikea not accepting my CDC card.”

Others have reported trying to use QR codes issued by states in the US or Canada and having them refused.

The Italian health ministry’s ordinance does not state that non-EU passes must be scanned – since some types (like the US CDC card) do not feature a QR code, and those that do (as in the case of the NHS app) are not compatible with the Italian system.

There has been considerable confusion about this, as business owners have been instructed not to let people in without a verified QR code and may not realise that there’s an exception for certain non-EU passes.

As they risk fines of up to 1,000 euros if they are found not to be enforcing the rules, no doubt many business owners are applying the rules cautiously.

“The restaurant staff were trying to use a green pass code reader to scan our NHS QR code. I told him that it wouldn’t work for non-EU codes. He eventually gave up and let us into the restaurant,” said Brian from the UK.

The problem could soon be solved for UK readers with the NHS pass, as a fix is reportedly in the works that would allow the Italian app to scan the UK code.

Several readers have reported that it is in fact already working for them after the second vaccination dose was registered.

US visitors from states which issue digital passes say they’ve had mixed results when trying to use them.

For readers from all countries, the biggest problem appeared to be that people checking passes weren’t always aware of the rules.

Several readers have written in to say they are carrying around printed copies of the Italian health ministry’s ordinance with the relevant section highlighted, and pleading their case.

But when this tactic hasn’t worked, readers report missing out on planned trips and events.

While at restaurants you can simply sit outside instead, this is obviously not always a realistic option at the moment with a heatwave sweeping the country.

Some visitors have found they were left with no choice but to get tested during their trip in order to access the Italian green pass, despite being fully vaccinated."

Thanks a million to both Pagno and whitehall. This is enormously helpful. I am just so hopeful that I can get IN to museums, etc, with the CDC card. As whitehall noted, it's possible I will be turned away somewhere. I don't care about restaurants, I am happy to grab some bread, cheese and whatever and eat on the go. What I do really care about are the museums, etc. AND....does anyone know about trains? I am scheduled for an all day tour in Napoli and will need to train from Rome to Napoli. I wish so much that we were at the point where the CDC cards could be transitioned into the Green Pass as well. I'm seriously thinking of calling the Italian Embassy here in DC to ask. They will probably just laugh at me. :( Thanks you guys!
