Are we crazy - driving from Brussels to Milan?

So, here's the story. We have a four day weekend coming up next week, and have no real plans. We've thought about hopping in our feul-paid-for car and driving to Italy to experience a little of the Olympics. Our thoughts were to drive to Milan, stay there, and take the train from Milan to Turin/etc. ViaMichelin.com says it's 8 1/2 hours drive to Milan from Brussels. However, I know that we will go through some serious terrain (although beautiful).

My question - has anyone done this drive before? Is is really 9 hours? We're used to driving from North Carolina to Georgia, and even Florida, so the distance is something we're used to. I'm just worried about the mountains, snow, etc.

Any advice? Thanks in advance.

Just keep in mind that a lot of Dutch are going skiing next week which may result in major traffic jams (it usually does) on major roads to ski destinations in germany, france, Italy and switzerland. This may be a problem if you are driving back sunday the 26th.
