Are we Crazy?
Hi,
My husband & I are starting to plan our trip back to Europe for next Spring. We visited Munich, Salzburg & Venice earlier this year. We felt like we didn't spend enough time in the Salzburg area, so we want to go back. We also loved Italy & would like to see Rome. My question is- Is it crazy to have this itinerary??: Rome 4 days Cinque Terra 4 days Salzburg area 4 days I wanted to split the travel time between Rome & Salzburg- it's about 13 hours by train, I think. Thoughts?? Thanks, Michelle |
why 4 days in Cinque Terre?
just curious what your plans are there |
ditto

Looks fine to me if that's what you want to do. Nothing crazy about it in terms of making sense (to me, anyway).
I just do have the same curiosity as the others, though -- why do you want to spend four days in Cinque Terre? I haven't been there, but have friends who have, and their description of what they did there and what it was like was nothing I'd want to devote four days to. They didn't either. |
We really thought it would be a good chance to just relax. I'd have no problem giving another day to Rome & Salzburg each. I was kinda worried about the time on the train, so I wanted to split it up.
Thanks!! |
You could do the 4 days in Salzburg, then train to Bolzano via Innsbruck and spend 4 days in Bolzano. It's a beautiful town with great shopping (darn it) and great food. Half German half Italian. Otzi the Iceman is in the museum there and well worth a visit. There are some great day trips from there into the gorgeous Dolomites. Perhaps you can go to a spa. Then go to Rome. I'm planning a similar trip for spring but will add in some time in Venice.

Rather than four nights at Cinque Terre, I can recommend Santa Margherita Ligure. It's a very cute mid-sized town with a charming harbor and 'downtown' with shops and restaurants. We stayed there three nights. From SML, you can day-trip to the Cinque Terre, and to Portofino for another day. It makes a very good home base.
We stayed at a charming little B&B-type hotel, the Hotel Nuova Riviera. I wrote a detailed trip report about SML. You can find it by clicking on my name above. I'd suggest: 5 days Rome 3 days SML 2 days Salzburg With 2 days added on someplace in between, to break up the long trip to Salzburg. :)>- |
