Are there UNSAFE areas where you should not stay in Lisbon Portugal??

Planning a trip in November and want to stay in the old town but want to make sure we will be safe walking day and also at night. What areas should we avoid?? Rossio Square and Praca de Figeroa or Chiado and Barrio Alto were suggestedfor hotels. What do you think>

We were off Rossio last year and plan to stay in Chiado this year.
We felt perfectly safe.
Of course, you must use normal precaustions whenever traveling.
Wear a moneybelt.

Several years ago I was advised (by the Hotel Concierge) to avoid the area ariund Chelas late at night. I can't say that is still valid with all the 'urban renewal' type of building that has been going on.
The Chelas Metro station is still one of my favorites.

Just a question: WHY would any tourist go to Chelas????? Why would anyone want to go there? Nothing there to look at , just a poor neighbourwood, in Lisbon surroundings !!!!

We were in Portugal just a few weeks ago. We always felt safe. Just take usual precautions that you would use for any city. And like Sher suggested, wear a moneybelt - I always wear one when I travel.

tere asks: "WHY would any tourist go to Chelas????? Why would anyone want to go there? Nothing there to look at ... "

Back in 1998 I did a Photo Essay about MetroLisboa, featuring the new Oriente line out to the site of Expo98. I have traveled on Metro Systems in Paris and London, Washington, DC, Chicago, Boston and New York City, Bilbao, Madrid and Lisbon and nowhere have I seen a Station as imaginative in Design as MetroLisboa's Chelas Station-stop.
BYW
Unfortunately, I couldn't find anyone to publish my Photo-Essay. My primary targets were Magazines published for and distributed to airline Passengers.

...not that you should have been forced to explain yourself...but a nice reminder that not everyone travels just to see the top 5 sights in each city.

Nedsireland, now I understand why you went to Chelas. It's unsafe, yes.I was surprised why anyone would want to go to that area, lol.

Walkinaround, please don't comment on what you don't know. Your post saying my comment on Knightsbridge being quiet was meaningless in another thread wasn't nice also so please restrain your bitterness and relax , ok?

Thanks for your help. I think we are going to probably stay near Praca dos Restauradoes and be close to Barrio Alto and the restuarants and Fado for the evenings.

bailey6235 -- I had read that you planned to stay at the Pensao Geres in Lisbon -- how was that? We are planning on staying there in October and I would very much like to hear from you. Thank you. Hope you had a great trip.
