You can be quite sure that there will be a train or bus from the airport to the train station. That's pretty standard. I believe that many stations in Europe have done away with lockers for fear of bombs, but there is for sure a baggage check to be found, and it will only cost you a couple of bucks or less. Very handy.

You are well advised to call the train station or determine from someone with very recent experience as to whether luggage storage is available. As noted above, due to terrorists and bomb scares, luggage storage has been methodically eliminated nearly everywhere in Europe. You may wish to consider a piece of luggage that converts to a backpack. Good luck!

Luggage storage has NOT been eliminated in Europe. In mainline Europe you'll find luggage storage almost everywhere, however in the UK this is much rarer due to terrorist problems although you can still store luggage at some of the main stations.
In Florence there is a luggage deposit office. This costs 5000 lira for 12 hours and is open from about 5am to 1am.

There is luggage storage at the Florence train station because I used it last year. I can't remember the exact cost but it is per 12 hours not 24 as you might think (although the cost is certainly not prohibitive). Be careful-the attendant tried to short change me but backed down when I questioned him firmly.
