Are There Any Exceptional Beatles Tours or Private Guides?

My husband and 13-year-old son will be on their own in London on a Saturday late morning/afternoon, and would like to do something Beatles-related. There is a London Walks' Beatles walking tour during that time, but I've only heard lukewarm things about it.. Any ideas or suggestions? This is for this coming August. Thank you.

We recently took a day trip from London for a Beatles tour - it's only a little over two hours by train. Totally worth it, if you're a big fan. We had a private taxi tour, visited the Beatles Story, and stopped in at The Cavern before heading back to London. Two days would be ideal, but it can be done in a day.

Some pics, if you're interested:

Yes - if you want Beatles sites, you need to go up to Liverpool. It would be a doable but loooooog and fairly expensive day.

The London Walks tour in London is about the best you'll get there - not necessarily the best option during a short London stay though IMO. But DH/son can always go take photos at "the" crosswalk if they don't want to take the tour.

I agree you need to go to Liverpool. Liverpool is the home of the Beatles.

London Euston to Liverpool Lime Street is just over 2hrs with trains every hour. It's £40 return if you book ahead and (if I recall) about £12 to go into the Beatles Story. There's also a 3D exhibition down at the Docks which is included in the ticket. It's at the point where you would take the ferry across the Mersey - which you could do at the same time. There is a reconstruction of The Cavern in the Beatles Story which is quite realistic. The actual Cavern was pulled down - although there is a pub / club of the same name on the site of the original. You can also visit Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields.

Liverpool is definitely worth a visit as it's a lovely city in its own right (and has recently been a European 'Capital of Culture'). The shopping area is lovely and there is an equivalent of the London Eye for aerial views of the city.

For rail tickets go to www.virgintrains.co.uk. You can buy the tickets online and collect at the station (from the auto-dispenser). If you buy the cheap tickets referred to above you 'must' travel on th specified trains.

The Beatles Story is at the Albert Dock.

Does anyone know anything about the London to Liverpool tour offered by London England Tours?

The tour offered simply sells you a railway ticket to Liverpool and a tour (which seems to be well thought of by those who like that sort of thing) you can buy off the internet anyway.

If you plan that kind of day, the prepackaged deal is a great deal cheaper than if you booked it yourself a week or two before the tour (if there are still tickets available). If you can decide three weeks or more in advance, and got the 0810 train, it would cost you £75 for the train ticket (www.nationalrail.co.uk) and £16 for the Magical Mystery Tour (http://www.cavernclub.org/the-magica...l-mystery-tour). Booking the train further in advance would save you even more.

It's practically impossible to buy a railway ticket from London to Liverpool that gives you time for the return journey and a day's touring there in the same day for much under £80 or so, even if you make a booking (which can't be cancelled or changed) several weeks in advance.
