Another vote for the 3M - Minnetonka Moosehide Moccasins. Bought them this summer in Moab... like butter - amazing, I never want to take them off! And style works in Europe without being too blindingly American. I also use Keds stretch-fit...ahhhhh. My mom and sister swear by Mephisto's... but my feet take half-sizes, and Mephisto only comes in whole sizes, so can never find a pair that fits. (PS I live in Europe, and it seems that only Americans wear Mephistos...) Husband uses New Balance tennies or Rockports or Mephistos...

Bought a pair of the Mephisto 'Tods' at
the store on Rue Cler. Like the look
of them but, boy, are they uncomfortable! Paid l50E then saw the
same shoe in Beaune for l00E -AND my
Visa is still to arrive (sob)!

Lily: I've heard Dexter is no longer
in business.

Too late for the original poster, I know, but I just had to say i bought a pair of Mephistos for a trip and after walking in them for a day on the cobblestone streets of Santorini, my feet were so sore I was miserable for weeks afterward. I think it was a mistake to buy new shoes 2 weeks before the trip. Maybe if I'd had them longer and broken them it they would have been more comfortable.

Another vote for Mephistos, bought in Rome for 40 percent off the price you'd get it for in the US. And to SSS, I usually wear a half size too but have no problem with the Mephisto I was fitted with.

Wore my Teva "Salani" sandals all over Italy, walked 3 or more hours a day and never had a problem. They are a little more dressy than reg. Tevas so could wear them with skirts and pants also. The one day I wore my New Balance walkers, my feet were hot and sweaty!

Mephisto are way too expensive for me, but I did end up throwing money away on the Rockports that I purchased for the trip. They were just horrid. Fortunately I had my black princess style Reeboks with me that I probably paid $45 for. They saved my life. What was funny, was seeing how many other people in Paris and London were wearing tennis shoes, tho I had been told that they weren't dressy enough. Ha!

This just proves that you should wear whatever shoes that are comfortable. The Europeans don't pay attention to your feet as much as you do.

I wore my Joseph Seible clsed-toe sandals almost every single day for 8 days in London and Paris. Great arch support! Take moleskin and band-aids in your bag every day. Moleskin saved several in our group from developing blisters.

Watch out! Tony Stellaroso and his friend X are unhappy with these what to wear threads!
I'd suggest Arche shoes for women. They are made in France and are pricy, but last forever. The sandals with a touch of elastic over the top of the foot are very comfortable for all day wear. The sole is made of latex and really absorbs the shock to the foot. They are pretty enough for evening wear, and very light in weight so pack well. I live in a warm climate and wear them in all seasons, night and day, and they are still in good shape five years after purchase. They are sold in U.S. in Nordstroms and in N.Y. and Boston in "Arche" stores and also over the internet if you are sure of your size.
