Are hotels near Amer Embassy in London okay?
 

I was planning on staying at the Millenium Mayfair on Grosvenor Square in Mayfair (got a good rate) then found out it is right near the US Embassy--does anyone know if this area is chaotic or are there protests there or is the area barricaded? I'm wondering if I should go somewhere else!

Grosvenor Square is one of the most exclusive areas in all of London. Why would you think it is chaotic?

The daily papers here report no demonstrations in Grosvenor Square. Indeed, cycling around the West End and Bloomsbury I've not seen one at all. I ought to have added that evenn in the days of big anti-war demos in Grosvenor Square against Vietnam Americans were never a target of attasck. Indeed, I think young Americans took part in the battles between demonstrators and police.<BR><BR>Ben Haines

I understand that in Paris, the USA embassy is highly guarded by police with machine guns and barricaded--if this is also the case at the embassy in London then it could be a little nerve wracking or cause some discomfort to stay at a hotel next door. Or the thought that it could be a target for terrorists could be uncomfortable. has anyone been by the embassy and can speak from firsthand experience?

In Paris almost all govt bldgs are guarded by heavily armed police and soldiers - just a normal thing in Paris. A little more so now -- but the American Embassy doesn't have any more security than the Police station or city hall or Luxemborg Palace.

I took a bus by the American Embassy last week. The road in front of the embassy is blocked off as well as the small park across the street (no cars allowed to park in the area). But this was all I saw. Beyond that it was very quite and very nice.
