The Palantine does not appear on the plans of many people, and we found it fascinating. Probably needs two or three hours, and it allows a view of "domestic" Rome, as distinct from "monumental" Rome, such as the Forum and Colosseum. Worth a look, and it has more shade than other places. There are good views over Rome from the Palantine.

Our family also really enjoyed the Palatine. I am a big I Claudius fan so seeing the area where the emperors lived was especially interesting to me. If you only have time for a brief visit there, you can enter from the Forum near the Arch of Titus and get a great view of the Forum from the Farnese gardens.

We saw the Forum and Colosseum one day, the Palatine the following morning. All three at once in time to get to the Vatican museums by 3 would seem too rushed to me. It also depends on how much time you want to take for lunch. We had more time in Rome than you will (7 1/2 days vs. 5) and liked to combine some sitting/watching the world time with touring time each day.
