Archaeogical tours guides in Crete
We will spending a 2-3 days in Crete and wish to have an in-depth visit to the archaeological sights and excavations there.
Does anyone know of any very good archaeological/historical tour guides for private or semi-private tours?

That's a very good question. I've had a quick squint at www.explorecrete.com- which you should look at too; but I can't see anything.
I've asked the webmaster, who knows EVERYTHING about Crete, so I'll see what he says and tell you (tho' you could come and have a look for yourself.
I have a copy of the Blue Guide which mught have some stuff in it too, but it's in the office, so I'll check tomorrow.
If I were totally stuck, I;'d go and ask one of the guides at KNossos if they'd do a homer. they are nearly all archeology students or graduates, so I'd think you'd get someone.

Thanks Sheila, have already been on that website. Was surprised not to find anything there regarding tours. Have found it helpful to have a private or semi-private one that can go at our pace and schedule. Am an older archaeology student. Will try to contact some of the people at the various digs. Perhaps they can volunteer someone.
Thanks again.
Thanks again.

Contact Fantasy Travel and Dolphin-Hellas Travel, both in Athens. They may be able to make some recommendations.

Mweiner, Yannis has answered and asked for PM for details. Might as well cut out the middleman, and do it yourself

We recently returned from a 10 day stay in Crete. We simply went to a local travel agent in Chania and signed up for a tour of Knossos and the archeological museum. Our guide was wonderful, and really knew his stuff. We may have just lucked out,but it worked for us.

I don't think there are any excavations on Crete (the island is fairly well built up.) You can do these yourself if you hire a car. Driving is easy there but the island is deceptively long.:

We used Maria at Diktynna Travel in Chania for all of our reservations in Crete including a wonderful private guide for the antiquities. Maria can be reached at
