Aran Islands in wintertime

A friend and I are planning to take the ferry to Inishmore from Ros a Mhil in December. I imagine that most of the island is shuttered up from tourists at this time of the year.

For anyone who has been to Inishmore in the winter, what exactly is open? Can you get to Dun Aengus, for example? Can you rent bicycles at this time? Or are there still guides?

Thanks in advance!

Things start to gear down by the end of September but the big island is still ready and available for the reduced but steady stream of visitors. Possibly worth a look at the Island Blogs,

or catch the FB page

Rossaveal departures start at 10.30am. (Up to 4 sailings daily to each Island)

I think the ferry from Rossaveal goes in all sorts of weather. Sit in the back of the boat in the middle for less movement. I would go anytime of the year. Might be a bit cold and windy for bikes but there are people waiting to give your tours.
