April 9 US Consul Warning of Threat to Tourists Istanbul, Antalya

In an unusually specific message issued April 9, the US Mission/Consulate to Turkey

"would like to inform U.S. citizens that there are credible threats to tourist areas, in particular to public squares and docks in Istanbul and Antalya. Please exercise extreme caution if you are in the vicinty of such areas. For your personal safety, we urge you to monitor local media."

This is copied over from the long running thread about Turkey on the Europe board, started by otherchelebi, who is a native of Turkey and a current resident of Istanbul.

otherchelebi wrote in that thread :

"The April 9 American Embassy warning is both an alarm and a deterrent.

The bad guys follow these missives also and hopefully they will refrain doing anything in the mentioned cities and areas. But they may change their venues.

The warning is also a good sign that American and Turkish intelligence is uo-to-date and collaborating.

When the German consulate gave a warning for Istanbul a few eeks ago, the event took place at Ankara.

I cannot put anyone's mind at ease for coming to Turkey. For some regions, risks are significant, possibly meaning over 1%.

For Istanbul, staying on the Bosphorus or the Asian side, taking regular ferries or special personal yacht tours will definitely make the risk insignificant. "
