Apps for France

We will be leaving for France (Dordogne) in just over a week and whilst we are, sort of, ok with the basics of the language it is very rudimentary. Can anyone recommend any good apps for translating and pronunciation? Any help is much appreciated.

should get you about 800 words if you focus.

Thanks for that, I'm looking more for instant translation rather than learning the language, if that makes sense. I've been looking at google translate app but it doesn't always get things right. I thought I'd heard of an app where you hold your phone over something like a menu and using the camera it could translate it into English but I can't seem to find anything like that.

Google translate

Sorry...reading your second post, google translate works with the phone's camera. I think it is fairly accurate, though I don't spaek any second language well enough to know the difference. My wife is a native Russian speaker and thinks it works well for that.

Here is a pretty good rundown of Google Translate. The two way conversation feature can be useful, if you know when to try it.

So, what do you say when you walk into a shop?

The point is that you are trying to deal with two issues, the culture and the language. How will your app tell you what to say?

Thanks for that link rs899, didn't realise that I could use the camera function on google translate, does exactly what I wanted it to :) and thank you everyone else for your suggestions, I shall also have a look at them.

For Google Translate, I would suggest you follow through and download the French language pack to your phone so that the phone isn't going to be trying to check the internet as it tries to translate. It will be faster and save a lot of data costs.

Good idea, I shall do that thanks.
