Approx cost of taxi between Sorrento and Positano
It's an additional €250 for the private charter boat to pick us up and drop us off in Sorrento. This is pretty much across-the-board with every company we contacted as most are based in Positano.
I don't want to rely on the Villa staff to arrange these things for us as I feel like the prices are inflated. Older posts that I've searched for on these forums seem to suggest a taxi would be €60 each way. Is this still about right? Would there be an additional charge since there are 5 of us as we would probably need anther vehicle like a van? Thanks. |
Here's a thought, Google 'transfer service Sorrento to Positano'. You will get several websites, several of which will give you an online quote for your party of 5.
|
It's about 80 euro but as it's not a fixed fare destination, you could be stuck in traffic and the meter will tick over...and over...and over.
Get a fixed price car service to take you. Or even better - the bus is about 4 euro. |
I would certainly not take a bus with 5 people and luggage in August along the Amalfi drive. If you think a taxi can stuck in traffic, so can a bus. Unairconditioned, and you are standing, not sitting, because the bus is packed to the gills.
The car service I used in the Amalfi area was benvenuto limousines. They were wonderful. I know they have vans. They will give you a quote online via e-mail and you can compare it to the price your hotel/villa is quoting for you. There are other companies. Take a look at TripAdvisor for reviews. |
PS: I wouldn't take a bus on the Amalfi drive on a sunny day in December without luggage. It's a nauseating ride.

We've used GUEMAR TRAVEL based in Sorrento many times for trips all over the Amalfi Coast. Check their pricing and some of the others listed above for comparison.
BTW, AVOID the SITA bus unless absolutely necessary. |
Thanks. I will be avoiding any and all busses. I deal with them enough in my day to day life and have no desire to do so on my vacation. I think it's actually worth it to pay the extra money and be picked up by the boat in Sorrento. That initial quote of 2500 euro for the private boat charter was definitely pricey but not really as preposterous as we initially thought even though we did not end up taking it. It included Capri AND the Amalfi coast. All the other charters do one or the other with lots of time spent in a particular place while they dock ( 4 hours on Capri or 3 hours in Amalfi etc ). The initial itinerary with which I had presented the villa was a whole lot of cruising around. Fuel is pricey. For them to get me in Sorrento and then bring me back to Sorrento is approx two extra hours added to the trip.

So now an extra €250 sounds worth it? Smh at all the research people here have been doing for you. A car service, not a taxi, will be a third of that price. But, it is your trip. Enjoy.

The driver we always use to take us from the Naples airport to our apartment in Positano charges a flat fee of 100 euro - and that is for 2 of us. So it would be much less than that for Sorrento to Positano. And he usually drives a van, which would fit the 5 of you.
You can email him for a quote - his name is Sergio Rianna and his email is [email protected] |
Huh? I took your advice and googled "transfer from Sorrento to Positano" and for the van we would need for the 5 of us it would have been 90 euro each way plus tip. Hardly seemed worth the savings. I'm not looking for anyone to do research for me. I'm looking for people who have experiences and have the time to write back. No one is obliged by any means. sMh.

Why not take a ferry from Sorrento to Positano? Not sure when you are traveling, because that does make a difference, but it is very inexpensive and still gives you water views. We have also done a transfer with a driver and van. Agree with you all about not using the bus.

Wow ekc. Thank you so very much. I will definitely email him. Much appreciated.
|
Bob, the ferry will likely not work for their boat trip as I believe the first ferry doesn't arrive in Positano until 11:00 or so.

No problem Zen. Sergio is a doll. Tell him Engred recommended him.
|
Sandralist - the OP is looking for a ride after a day trip. Not travelling with luggage!
|
Zenfoodist - you said 'plus tip'.
Don't tip in Italy. Just don't. It's not part of the culture and Americans tipping is making life difficult for everyone as it is creating a culture of expectation. |
I was told "plus tip" lol
|
That's what I mean. If the car company told you 'plus tip' it's because they know you're American.
You are under no obligation to tip anyone. Don't let anyone bluff you. Restaurants will try it on too. Ignore. |
That is so unnatural for me, but I do know it to be true. We are 20 percent tippers almost all the time here in NYC. Very odd not to do it in Italy.
|
I understand it may be natural - in the USA - but please don't bring this culture with you. I can't stress that enough. Not only does it rip you off- it rips off others. All the tip you need is change on the table in a restaurant - there are no spaces on credit card to add a tip anyway.
When I'm with my Italian family we are never blatantly asked to tip as the Italians wouldn't dare try it on - but I have overheard waiters do it in restaurants to tourists. It's shameful. I hope you have a lovely trip - you've done a ton of research so it should all go well for you. |
