Appropriate Dress
 

I have taken quite a few overseas vacations, always traveling light and wearing casual clothes. <BR><BR>Later this summer I will be in Prague for one week and want to dress appropriately.<BR> <BR>1. Is it ok to wear shorts during the day?<BR><BR>2. Is a dress jacket generally required in the evening for cultural events or is it ok to wear a shirt and/or sweater--I have never taken a sports jacket on my previous overseas trips.<BR><BR>Advice and suggestions will be apppreciated.

I was in Prague last June and stayed at the Four Seasons Hotel. I would not worry one bit about what you will be wearing. The people in Prague (including tourists) dress down. Shorts, jeans anything goes. In fact I saw more blue jeans on the Charles Bridge then in all of Europe combined. <BR><BR>I would not make shorts my primary dress unless it is unseasonalby warm. Jeans, tee shirts and alot of black are worn by everyone. No jacket was required at any restaurant or event.<BR><BR>I wore causual dresses with a jean jacket and was one of the most overdressed people day or night.

I would sugggest taking a sport jacket if attending a cultural event. Jeants, etc. may be ok for the Charles Bridge, but not for an evening of Mozart, etc. Also, no shorts please.

You can wear about anything as a tourist during the day. I have attended perhaps a half dozen cultural events in Prague, from minor to the top performances (at the National Theatre and Rudolfinum) and you would not have to take a jacket if you don't want. There were plenty of men who did not, and that was at the top places. If you go to those tourist concerts a lot of cities are having now (excerpts from pieces, performers in costume, etc.) you really can wear anything. IN general, it seems dress is more relaxed in almost any city nowadays at major performing arts venues (and I don't think you'll be forbidden any where), but people aren't quite the expensive fashion plates and sophisticates in E/Cen Europe as, say, Paris in my experience. You might want to dress up more for special events, premiers, or in the high season, but really, in Aug. anywhere in Prague, I wouldn't worry about it. I did even seen some in shorts at a concert in a museum (those are a little more casual, in the National Museum, because it isn't a traditional concert space or seating (you sit on pillows on the steps) and, I might add, the acoustics are superb and they do get good performers (eg, I heard the Stamitz Quartet).
