Appropriate clothes Edinburgh in August
 

I have checked weather.com for my trip to Edinburgh Aug 18-23 and it shows high of 65, low in 50's. So I won't be packing my light summer Florida clothes. But can anyone help me with what would be appropriate for the weather and for activities such as tea at the Balmoral, visiting the Royal Yacht, a literary pub tour, a stay at a castle, and sightseeing/shopping. Will everyone be in dark colors or will people be wearing lighter colors but perhaps heavier fabric or layered. I have a ticket for the 10:30 PM Tattoo Sat night and imagine it will be quite cold at that time of evening. Thanks

There is no dress code for Britannia - you're not dining with the Queen on it - you're a paying visitor walk around in whatever you feel comfortable in. No one is looking at you, you know the temperature adjust accordingly.

We just returned from Scotland last week, including several days in Edinburgh. People were wearing everything imaginable. My biggest points of advice:

-Take your most comfortable shoes. Edinburgh is a wonderful city to walk around in, but it is filled with hills and steps. And if you are so inclined, there are some nice walks up Calton Hill or to Arthur's Seat.

-Be prepared for rain. We took waterproof jackets, hats, umbrellas and shoes that would withstand some water.

When the sun is out, it can be nice and warm, but we found that the weather can change quickly. Layering was a good strategy. I did go to the Tattoo a number of years ago and remember it being cool in the evening.

MK she is from a place that is hot year round and people dress for this as well as wear lighter colours to keep the heat away. Would you ever get off that high horse before someone kicks you?

Vicky my mum lives in Flotida and visits me (in Ireland) often with the same questions of how warm to dress. Last time I was over in Scotland in August it was warm in the day but very cool at the castle in the evening. A sweater and light jacket would do for the tattoo and then a light shirt and sweater you can take off for the day. Layers works best in this weather.


Dress neat casual for anything more upmarket i.e. I would not wear runners to tea at the Balmoral. What would you wear for tea at the Ritz in Naples Fl? Pretty much the same dress code in the U.S. It's the summer and we all tend to dress a bit lighter in the summer in Europe as fashion seems to dictate.

My hotel is near Carlton Hill, the Cairn, for the first 3 nights (50 GBP booked WAY ahead, Dalhousie Castle for 4th night - queen room in castle with breakfast $249. This is my usual routine in Europe - a modest hotel for part of the stay, a more luxury hotel for a day or 2. I usually try to do the modest one first, then dont' feel so let down as going from luxury to modest. I plan to dress appropriately for the Balmoral - have a reserv for the Chocolate Buffet tea Thurs Aug 21 for 6 PM. I am taking a longish spandex handkerchief skirt, matching top smocked and trimmed with lavender, and a lavender organdy scarf to wear around my waist...thanks for the advice about the rain; will plan for it so won't be disappointed if it does rain - hopefully it isn't a solid all day kind of thing! For the Go family - did you buy anything interesting?

I'm astounded that you can take an outfit for a specific occasion. I'm going away this weekend, I've selected outfits, but couldn't tell you when I'll wear them, if i wear them at all.

Most of the time, the weather changed throughout the day. The only day of consistent rain was, unfortunately, our day in Stirling.

We did not do any serious shopping on this trip, although Edinburgh is a fun place to shop (I've done plenty of it on other trips there). My favorite shop on this whole trip was Skye Batiks in Portree (Isle of Skye), which sells various things -- from cushion covers to bathrobes -- in Celtic prints.

Hey guys. The sun shone nearly all day here, today.It's 10pm and it's still light and warm.

It'll be warmer than the 65s, and warmer than the 50s. Take a couple of sweaters and summer clothes and LAYER

I still say if you need strangers advice on what to wear you are not ready for Intl. travel.

I quite agree.

When visiting Edinburgh I wear my Dress Stuart tartan.

I liked your idea about staying part of the time in a modest hotel and then something a little nicer.
