Appropriate attire for summer in Italy (women)

HI there,
I know it has been asked on here before, but I am having trouble pulling up relevant threads in a search.

I'm going to Siena and Rome for 11 days in a few weeks with my mom. I'll be 18 weeks pregnant and some of my most comfortable travellable shirts are nice looking sleevless tops. Not tank tops, but cut off just at the shoulder.

Do the women in Italy wear these? (It has been too long since I was there in the summer to remember!)

ahh... I posted that before I was finished! Just wanted to add that I figured if I did wear a sleeveless shirt, it wouldn't be appropriate to visit a church. I do have some tops with sleeves that I'm bringing, I am just kind of limited with my wardrobe right now!

Just bring a light shirt or shawl to put over your shoulders if you go inside a church, and you'll be fine.

Hi kello, in a lot of churches, and certain St. Peters, you need to have your shoulders covered and no shorts or short skirts. Capris would be fine and a shawl to cover your shoulders would be fine also.

A trip with your mom in Italy and a beautiful baby in your future, how more perfect is that!! Happy and safe travel to you.

Thank you for the suggestions! I have a light summer shawl I can use, but might just try to avoid the sleeveless if I know I'll be visiting a church.

Yes...I'm hoping it is a fantastic trip. My part is mostly a business conference (taking place in Siena), unfortunately, but I have a few extra days. My mom loves to travel (she's a regular on here ;-) ) and I'm taking her with me!

We were in Italy a few weeks ago during the heat wave and women wore anything and everything. Lots of skirts...not really bright colors, though. Lots of capris. Even some long pants although I am not sure how they survived the heat. Even though it was HOT, not many shorts. Tops were tank tops, sleeveless tops, plain T-Shirts ( no logos).

Basically whatever was comfortable. Enjoy.

I have to reiterate what barbmc said, "Lots of skirts and basically whatever!" However, when we were at the Vatican (May 25th, and VERY hot) I was amazed at the clothing I saw on many many women, lots of tank tops and mini skirts. I asked our Angel Tour guide about it because I'd seen so much on this forum about proper attire, and she told me that when someone actually gets into the Vatican (there are long lines) they must cover their shoulders and knees. I still noticed alot of bare skin once inside, so I never did figure it out!

But in the rest of the city of Rome, anything goes! Have a wonderful time with your mom.
