Thank you enzian!! After some thought I think we are going to keep our car. We will enjoy the drive from Meersburg to Grindelwald and we like to be able to stop if we see something interesting.

I've sent a inquiry request in for the Hotel Gletschergarten. There seem to be many good reviews on Fodors on this hotel. Hopefully they have rooms available. I originally thought we would like to be further up in a more secluded chalet or B&B but my husband and I like to 'walk to town' so decided to squash that idea.

If we do stay at this hotel we can make train trips to Wengen, Muerren and Gimmelwald. I am also interested in the Bachalpsee hike/trail. I need to read the link you sent me above.

You are most welcome, and I hope you have a wonderful trip. The Gletschergarten is very nice--charming from the outside with its flower-bedecked balconies. (Be sure you ask for a room with a balcony---that is my Rule #1 when I am in Switzerland).

If you hike to the Bachalpsee---don't stop there. The same trail continues on to the Faulhorn, and you can have lunch or a snack at the mountain hotel there. It is truly spectacular.
