Apartments in Rome?
 

My wife and I are planning on taking a trip to Rome in mid-March. Can anyone recommend a couple of good apartments that are worth looking into as a possible alternative to hotels? A variety of locales are welcome; we haven't settled on one particular neighborhood yet. Thanks.

The problem is that you are looking only about seven weeks ahead, and you want to go to Rome in the Palm Sunday/Easter period. Most well-reviewed apartments will be booked. Take a look at www.slowtrav.com, though, for agency reviews and apartment reviews. They have a strong Italy selection.

We stayed in this apartment last summer. It is only a few blocks from Campo de Fiori and Piazza Navona. It is located above PierLuigi Ristorante which is one of our favorite places to eat. Rentalinrome was easy to work with.

If you would be satisfied with a suite rather then a complete apartment, I can strongly recommend http://www.apartment-saint-peters.com/ The terrace is a fabulous thing to return to after a hard day of sightseeing!

We had a very good experience renting from realrome.com. If you search on this forum you will find consistently positive reviews for the agency. I have no idea whether any of their apartments will still be available for the time you want.
There are a wide range of possibilities for apartment rentals in Rome and people could probably be more helpful if you indicated how much you want to spend. In general apartments are better value for the money than hotels.

It was a bargain at £130 per night and was clean and smart, extremely secure and well stocked with toiletries, cleaning products and basic foodstuffs, bread, butter, jam, coffee etc as well as plenty condiments etc.

The Colliseum is right at the end of the street as is a subway station, but it is still a lovely quiet area.

A few minutes walk - the area roughly between Via Cavour and Via Baccina - takes you to an area with lots of little restaurants and cafes.

Have fun - we loved Rome.

Sorry - misquoted the price - it was 130 Euros, not £ sterling!

The street that that apartment is on (Via del Colosseo) is actually the ancient Vicus Sandalarius (street of the sandal makers).

But later in the Republic(?) and into Imperial times it was well known for the Taberna Librarii (book shops) on that street.

As only the rich could afford the luxury of books figure alot of famous people were once window shopping (book titles in stock were advertised outside on the shop) and browsing those shops whose remains like the street itself are just below ground level.

I've walked thru that area a few times, there is a bit of history from there and over to Via Cavour but with all the remains buried, only the stories survive. Regards, Walter
