Apartments in Prague
I plan on staying in Prague for 10 days in May 2005. My question is is it worth it to get an apartment for that time-being or to stay in a hotel? Which is cheaper? Which is safer for a woman traveling alone? Thanks.

I have never rented an apartment during any of my (relatively few) travels solo. It seems to me that many of the nice aspects of having an apartment are most relevant to families or groups traveling together (having a "living room" cooking or sharing meals "made in" together).
So, I don't know if you would like an apartment in Prague - - but that would be true in any other city.
That said, I can strongly recommend the agency www.athos.cz for apartments OR hotel accommodations. you can even "chat" online, with them, real-time - - using ICQ.
I wouldn't rate one safer than another - - though a hotel has a desk clerk if you are having any safety or health-related concerns. An apartment is generally quite unattended (though we did have access to our landlord at Apartments Zatec, anytime we wanted her).
Best wishes,
Rex

Thanks Rex, the reason I was looking into this was because I will be on a relatively cheap budget and was looking for the best places to stay. I would much rather spend my money on museum entrances, park fees and so on instead of an expensive hotel that I only sleep in. I was looking at some apartments and they seemed cheap...so that was the reason for the question. Unless you know of any cheap hotels (not necessarily hostels) that are in the area?

I just returned from Prague a week ago and I can sort of recommend a cheap hotel/pension. It's the Avalon-Tara and it was about 45 US dollars a night. The reason I say sort of recommend is that it had both pros and cons. On the plus side it was a very good location, a two minute walk from old town square, five minute walk from Wenceslas Square. I was traveling alone but wanted an ensuite bathroom so they gave me a double room with bathroom (guess they don't have singles with bathroom) for the $45 so it was nice and large, had a big window, and it did have a small refridgerator. On the negative side the interior is really budget looking - crappy furniture, dark hallway, no lift, no TV, no phone. But for cheap price and good location it was OK.

The Lida is an excellent pension, but it is not very central. As I recall, you had to take a bus and then walk a ways. You needed a pretty good sense of direction also. I think they cater more to people with cars.
