Apartment rental in Rome
 

I know Rome is expensive, and we are going to be there for 8 nights, so I guess renting an apartment would make more sense financially. It’s just the 2 of us, so a 1BR would be enough.

Can anyone recommend one in the Pantheon area? It has to be clean, safe and quiet (I am a very light sleeper) and max 200 euros/night in May 2014. A terrace would be VERY nice thing to have :)

Take a look at the website for Rome Loft, since they have so many terrace apartments and you can search by date and budget. Do understand that getting a terrace in that neighborhood most likely means climbing a lot of narrow steep stairs. If you are going when it is still warm weather, a top floor apartment will be hotter than a lower one.

If you are a very light sleeper, try to get double glazed windows and even then, be careful about getting an apartment that overlooks restaurants and cafes. You can try tracking down reviews, but be wary of apartments that promise you that the "lively and popular via xxx is at your doorstop ". It can mean all night chatter outside your windows in the streets below and wine bottles getting recycled at 2 am and garbage pick up at dawn.

If you would consider staying away from the Pantheon, we stayed at this Trastevere apartment in May and thought it was a great value.

Nothing too fancy, but suited our needs, and we loved the little balcony.

We were thrilled to stay in Trastevere where this apartment is located because it was so much less crowded than the historic center and we felt like we could get a little peace and quiet. With 8 nights, it would seem that being right in the center of things would be a little less important since presumably you won't be running around from sight to sight. But that's just my opinion!

We have stayed in 3 different areas of Rome so far but Trastevere hasn't been one of them so this would be high on my list if we were going to be returning soon.

We have stayed here twice. Awesome place, huge terrace that is super. Bus stop right across the street about 1/2 a block. Taxi stand 3 blocks.

Good point, I haven’t thought of that...most likely, in May will be warm already.
Also, good point about a “lively” location, I’ll remember that :)

That apartment looks really nice...is there any public transportation close by? 8 nights sounds like a lot, but there is so much to see in Rome... I don’t know, I’m very torn, but I’ll definitely put this on the “maybe” list. Thanks a lot.

Unfortunately the location of the beehive is not one we are considering for this trip, but thanks for the suggestion.

We rented the Augusto Imperatore Apartment from rentalinrome.com

It answers a lot of your requirements: small terrace, super quiet, one bedroom, central location.

This apartment if right across from Gusto, so it's not at the Pantheon, but it is a really good central location.

The upsides are total quiet, balcony, on an inner courtyard, internet, security, small elevator and location location location. It's about half way between Spanish Steps and Piazza Navona.

Downsides are a somewhat worn bathroom. This is in an absolutely beautiful building with design studios on the ground floor and great public spaces. Inside the apartment in not deluxe, but we were comfortable enough. The inside doesn't quite match the outside.

Their search isn't working for me, or I would link it.

The tram stop isn't far away, and several buses stop nearby as well. Of course, like most of Rome, it's not always the easiest to get around on public transportation, but we managed to walk or take public transportation everywhere during our 5 nights except for a cab we took after one late night dinner. It did require a little effort and planning, but I'm not sure that would be different if you stay near the Pantheon.

There is also a great farmer's market nearby in the mornings.

But obviously, you should look into the different areas and decide if Trastevere is something that appeals to you.

Thanks a lot, and your last suggestion is what we will do: compare Trastevere and the historic center areas (they both have pluses and minuses, that's what makes this so difficult), see what's more important to us...and decide based on that.

YES! that's the attitude. we've been to Rome 3 times and stayed in a different area each time. of them all, Monti where we stayed on our first visit is the one I like best as an area, but I wouldn't recommend it for a first time as most of the things you're going to want to see are somewhere else!

IMO the Piazza Navona/Pantheon area is ideal for a first visit, as it's central to most major sights, though Trastevere would be pretty good too.

We stayed at palazzo Olivia (sp) great. It was probably 5-6 yrs ago. great location,clean quiet.
