Aosta area or elsewhere?
Was planning on staying three nights in Aosta early October. I'm now having second thoughts.
We were looking for wonderful mountains and great scenery.
Would the Asti area be a wiser area to stay?
Would Aosta be a reasonable day trip from Asti?
We were planning on starting our trip in this area after we fly into Milan.
This year we will be traveling for 3 weeks.

We thought about the Dolomites, but it seemed less practical distance wise.
We are flying into Milan and after 4 nights (3 north and 1 along coast as a stopover) we settle for awhile in the Lucca area (Barga).

We've been to both the Valle d'Aosta and the Dolomites. The latter is indeed spectacular, no doubt. We spent a week in Châtillon/Aosta and enjoyed the area very much. This was the last week of our three-week trip with a week each near the Cinque Terre (including Lucca) and near Verona, so the Aosta mountain scenery was a nice complement.
In the other post, I expressed disappointment in the Val di Cogne, but certainly no disappointment in those other valleys.
My suggestion would be to keep with your original plan, stay around St Vincent (no need to go to Aosta town) go to Breuil-Cervinia and to Chamois for a very nice day. You'll get the sunny side of the Matterhorn up close. That's two nights and stay on for another if you like it, or move on - to Asti and so forth.

I'd second Tuck's thoughts - go for it!
We spent a week in the Valle d'Aosta last year and thoroughly enjoyed it ...
The Val Tournenche day-trip idea up to Cervinia/ Matterhorn is a must. Chamois is a traffic-free mountain hamlet only accessible by cable-car with lovely views.
The other day-trip not to miss IMO is Courmayeur and Mont Blanc. You can take the cable-car ride up Mont Blanc for superb views.
If you want to do a really classic trip, you can take the cable-car up the Italian side, across the top and down to Chamonix on the French side (- and then return to Courmayeur by bus through the Mont Blanc tunnel).
Alternatively you can spend a pleasant day in Courmayeur itself and visiting the nearby valleys at the foot of Mont Blanc - Val Ferret and Val Veny ...

It's been awhile but we stayed in Asti, Alba, Aosta and Courmayeur. It was off season .. but I still remember Courmayeur and the beautiful view of Monte Bianco while dining on an outdoor terrace on pasta with lemon sauce. Sigh......My other favorite was Alba.
