Anywhere decent to stay in/near Swindon?

It looks as it I'll have to spend next week in Swindon for work. An initial look at the accommodation in Swindon has left me feeling a bit depressed.

I'm looking for somewhere clean and quiet preferably within walking distance of the centre with parking. Alternatively somewhere near Swindon which has an easy drive into the centre, where I don't have to drive anywhere to go out to eat.

thoughts, anyone?

If you don't mind a bit of a drive, Cirencester looks as though it has some decent hotels eg No 12.

Too far?

Malmesbury?

I haven't been to Swindon for thirty odd years. We used to go regularly to the swimming pool there with our kids, and became very adept at negotiating the Magic Roundabout.

Wantage is about half an hour away. There are plenty of pubs and places to eat there. I haven't been to Shrivenham for years but that may be an option, or Faringdon maybe?
South there is Chippenham, Lambourn, or even Marlborough.

How long do you want to drive into town?

Thanks all.

as happens in my job all too regularly, Swindon is now off. Can't say I'm too disappointed to be honest.

if the situation changes again, I'll be back.

Good luck not having to stay in Swindon :D

annhig Feb 27th, 2014 07:53 AM

quite, jj.

just looking at the hotels was depressing, I've no idea how I would have felt after a week there.

If this awful plan resurfaces, would suggest looking at airbnb rather than for hotels.

annhig Feb 27th, 2014 08:04 AM

hadn't thought of that, thursdaysd, thanks!

[though I've no experience of airbnb, and might need some hand-holding. Let's hope it never happens!]

Highworth!

iberiophile - The highworth looks great - if i ever have to go to Swindon, it looks just the ticket.

thanks!

I've stayed at the Fisherman's House B&B in Mildenhall many, many times and just love it. Mildenhall is just east of Marlborough. Marlborough has several restaurants to choose from too. Google "Fisherman's House Mildenhall". Also look at the Google images for it.

MikeS - I stayed at Fisherman's house too - only once for me, several years ago. It was absolutely beautiful!

(Don't confuse this Mildenhall w/ the one over in Suffolk)

lots of good ideas here if, as thursdaysd puts it, this awful plan ever resurfaces.

thanks, everyone.

When I asked my husband for suggestions he said delegate. He had to stay in Swindon a couple of times after we moved here. Third time he sent someone else.
He would have happily stayed back in Wantage, but lacking a car Swindon was where he had to stay.

lol, hetismij. The nature of my work doesn't allow me to do that, but it is entirely normal for a case to come into my diary and then go out again within hours - they might well have found someone more local which I'm all in favour of.

We spent an enjoyable evening at The Methuen Arms at Corsham, and would reccommend it as a place to stay. However, you may think it too far from Swindon.

I once visited a judge who sat at Swindon. His 17th century farmhouse home in Wiltshire was at least as far away as Corsham. It turned out he had been at the same school as me.

thank you for that, Chartley. i won't ask you to name him. BTW judges get free parking at court, we ordinary grunts don't, not any more. which is why I prefer to stay near enough to the court to walk there.
