I am sorry. I thought you had looked up Hotel Rosita and found it was located in Puerto Vallarta.

I am sick of posters who come on and post rumors, fear mongering , etc. ,or have one bad experience and then make sweeping generalizations like their one experience is the be all end Geraldine.

I readily admited thefts happen, BUT, keeping your stuff in a safe is still safer then not unless it is in a money belt. Duh.

Just read a post by an " experienced" traveller who had their wallet and passport taken out of their purse at Notre Dame. I hate reading stuff like that, a person who CLAIMS to have been to Paris many times doesn't seem to know to keep their passport in their safe or moneybelt, gosh , the pickpockets thrive in Paris because there are so very many stupid tourists .

Your experience was unfortunate, and I know things do happen like that, but you do understand planes crash too right?? Does that mean none of us should fly,, keep things in perspective, how many times have you used a hotel safe and not had a problem?

I absolutely agree that one should not carry valuables such as jewelery while traveling if one can help it. Having said that we had occasion to have a large amount of cash which we placed in the room safe in the Mercure Hotel in Tel Aviv and the Prima Kings Hotel in Jerusalem. We had no reason to re-count the cash every time we took it out as it had been in the safe, definitely closed and locked, and should have been safe! We did not figure out until we got home that someone had skimmed over $2K from us. We are not sure in which hotel the theft occurred, but obviously a room safe is NOT as scure as one would think!

I also want to comment on the part about keeping your passport in your room safe-We have been to countries where it is illegal to NOT have your passport on you. If the police have cause to talk to you and you do not have your passport on you, they can detain you at the police station.

so what, are you routinely stopped by the police for crimes? If you are arrested or detained, yes, police may keep you until you (or something you call) can produce your passport. This is the same as in the US, it isn't illegal to not have it on you, but if you are arrested or in trouble, the police can make you get it.

There are some sinister countries where the police roam randomly picking up people or arresting them, I might be more worried there, but Western Europe isn't like that.

I can't imagine anyone having a serious problem with police in Europe if they've left their passport in the hotel. I have heard of the police escorting someone back to his or her hotel to get the passport or the police sending an officer over to the hotel to get the passport from hotel management - but I can't see this being a major issue for anyone except in the most extreme circumstances. If someone is suspected of something bad, I can see the police using the passport issue as a stalling tactic to keep a person in custody longer, but if the passport wasn't a handy stalling tactic, they'd use another tactic.

Everybody should carry some form of identification, of course. I carry my drivers license and/or my passport card, which shows who I am. And I have a photocopy of my passport.
