Anyone Stayed in Kufstein??
For our trip next year, I have been looking at Kufstein as a "base" for a few days instead Berchtesgaden. Found some great pictures on the internet, but not much info on Fodors. Figure to stay there for several days touring the area with a day trip to Berchtesgaden and Konigsee.
Can anyone provide pros or cons on staying in Kufstein and possible hotel recommendations between 70 - 100 Euro for a double? |
Anyone??

Any special reason for Kufstein? It is not a really interesting town( they have a nice old fortress and Riedel Glass -but not much else). It is not a town most tourists might pick for a stay.
I assume you pick it for its central location on the Autobahn. To me, that is its only plus. A nice quiet place not too far away is Alpbach( about 10 km. from Autobahn) at the Brixlegg interchange. It is a beautiful village of small hotels in the style of Tirol and may be a better choice depending on your plans. You do not mention where you want to tour or activities.Innsbruck is 30-40 minutes west of Kufstein and several mountain passes will take you into southern Germany. Berchtesgaden is one of my favorite places with many things to do in easy driving time. I believe you would find Kufstein dull and not very appealing in contrast. |
I'd pick Berchtesgaden over Kufstein. If you want to stay in Austria, how about Kitzbuehel? It's a gorgeous little town in the mountains not tooooo far from Kufstein.

Molker, Peep, thanks for the replies. The reason I picked Kufstein IS because it isn't a place that most tourists would visit. The comments I have been able to find have been very positive and the pictures of the Altstadt did look interesting. We are just looking for a good base for a couple of nights between Meersburg and Hallstatt. Planned to make a day trip to Berchtesgaden / Konigsee.
Will take a look at Alpbach and Kitzbuehl. Thanks, again. |
