Anyone recently replace a lost passport?

H cannot find his passport which we need for a European trip in 2wks. Do the replacement companies advertising on the net work? How quickly can you get one replaced and what is involved? Thanks.

Hi H,

Go to http://travel.state.gov/passport/for.../ds64_845.html

You have to appear in person to replace a lost passport.

An expediting service might qualify as "appearing in person".

My sister had to replace her passport on one day's notice.

She took a quick flight to Seattle (We live 300 miles away) and went to the passport office where they were able to give her a new one that same day. Be sure to have a passport size picture and a copy of your ticket or itinerary, as the passport office will want proof that it's an emergency.

I can't recall if she needed her birth certificate, but it wouldn't hurt to bring it.

hellokittie,

A friend had her passport replaced in just a few hours at the office in New Orleans. She was there when the office opened, and went back after lunch to pick up the passport.

Yes, the replacement companies do work. I can't remember the name of the one we used to use when I was working, but I am sure a travel agent could give you a recommendation. They are pricey but certainly not as costly as flying!
