I have called all my credit card companies and am only taking those that only charge the basic 1% MC fee and no more.
All our ATM cards are for Plus/Pulse. I just read on the Enjoy Rome website that Cirrus is easy to find at the bancomats. What about Pulse????? Anybody know? |
Just talked to my bank, Wells Fargo - the clerk said the ATM fee in Italy is $3 "non-Wells Fargo fee." She didn't have an answer when I said I'd read [more than once on this Forum] that there's no ATM fee charged by Italian banks.
I suspect the "non Wells Fargo fee" is really a "Wells Fargo fee." Why can't they be honest? Fortunately, we have an ATM card with Bank of the West, which charges something like 1.5%. |
First of all, no bank I've ever encountered in Europe charged me a fee for withdrawing money, so you don't get charged on that side of the pond (unlike in the USA and Canada, where you pay a fee to get your own money out of an ATM machine unless it's one of your own bank's).
Second, check with your bank about fees it may charge for overseas withdrawals. My bank, which I carefully selected as a bank sensitive to the needs of small business, does not charge me anything, but that's because I met with the president of the bank and said hey, I'm in Europe a bunch of times a year and do not want to be charged a fee for ATM withdrawals. The bank made several accommodations for me, including enabling me to withdraw money from multiple accounts with the same ATM card from anywhere in the world. So I can go to France or anywhere in Europe and have funds deducted from any one of four accounts. Banks are businesses that are there to serve you - and remember that they are making money from your business. You need to take the initiative to get them to give you whatever services you require as a customer who is traveling overseas. No one should be paying a transaction fee to get their money out of a European ATM machine, for example. Just go to your bank, sit down with a customer service person, and state your position - I travel in Europe, I don't want to pay a transaction fee when I withdraw money using my ATM card, and if you don't like it, I take my business elsewhere. If that doesn't work, change banks. |
suzy: She was accurate. By "non-Wells Fargo fee", she meant a fee for using a non-Wells Fargo ATM. Same as happens in the states if you use a non-Wells Fargo ATM. It is WF that is charging the fee.
