It strikes me that those accessibility routes would also be useful for those worrying about getting their luggage from a vaporetto stop to their hotel without having to negotiate any bridges.

We were in Venice in November. On the 21st, the Venetians celebrate La Festa della Salute. Over that week, about 3 days before and after the date, they construct a temporary bridge over the Grand Canal to reach the church. There are no steps, and I think it would be wheelchair accessible. Perhaps that might play into your plans.
