Anyone here ever attend a JIM HAYNES Sunday dinner party in Paris?
I just emailed Jim with hopes of getting an invite for the Sunday Sept 23 party. We think it sounds like great fun to meet people from all around the world. Have you ever been to one of the parties? Thanks.

Yes. It is alot of fun. A few hints:
1. Make sure that you call Jim and get the code to go through the gate into his house. Jim is amazed how many people don't do this and there is no way in without the code. Also, ask him for detailed directions from the metro. Its a walk and easy to take a wrong turn.
2. The advice that Jim gave me for getting the most out of his parties - if you're in a group, split up and mingle. Its amazing how many people attend and just hang out on the porch with the few friends that they came with. If you're shy, try standing alone with a drink. Someone will come up and start taking to you.
3. Introduce yourself to Jim. He is incredibly charming and very interesting to talk to. Browse his bookshelf and if something catches your interest, purchase it. Jim lives off of his independent press, and I think he's books are worth the 5 -10 euros that he charges.

I would highly recommend going to one of Jim Hayne's dinner parties. Three months ago, I had the thrill of having drinks with him along with 3 of my other flying partners while on a layover in Paris. The man is AMAZING! He has had a remarkable life and is well versed on many many subjects.He seems to know everyone and everyplace-he would be a perfect addition to a Fodor gathering.Jim is definitely a free spirit and his books reflect that.(All from a man that did not graduate college?)
Sadly, I have not been back to Paris since(Rome always has my heart!) but am definitely planning on doing a Sunday there to go to the party.

He IS pretty amazing, especially his memory. He manages to remember every soul that walks through the door and as each consecutive person enters, he'll introduce that person to every single other in the room. Just awe-inspiring to have a memory like that.
Also, at the end of the night I purchased one of his books for my dear (now departed) friend, Sandye, who'd originally told me about these parties (she'd attended twice). He looked at the book and told me he believed she already had a copy. I insisted, no, no, she wants this one. Brought it home, and yes, she did indeed have it! How he remembered that I have no clue.
Now in regards to his books I believe he charges 15€ now?
Yep, he sure does know everyone including several members of the Rolling Stones, Mick Jagger included!

I know someone who went recently. She said it was good for casual visitors hoping to get more information about the city, but that overall the experience was rather bland. Lots of gay men trying to hook up, if that interests anyone.

I guess it depends on who is there on a certain night. The night we were there there were many fascinating people. It was an interesting experience. I think most of the Fodorites who were there that evening wrote something about it here.

where I met Barb and SeaUrchin. While I enjoyed it, I have to admit it's not as easy to mingle as I expected. I felt a little challenged. SeaUrchin, remember the young furniture maker that was talking to us? Didn't he seem ultra shy? I think if you are that shy, you may have a hard time. Other than that, it's kind of a fun thing to try.
