Anyone hear of these Dublin Hostels?

I went to borders and bought Rick Stevens travel book on Ireland as I am planning a trip to Ireland in Late July. I am planning on staying in Dublin on my first and last day before doing a six day bus tour. I know that Dublin is very expensive and I have read about two hostels the Kinlay House and the Four Courts Hostel. Has anyone heard or stayed at either of these two places or have any other suggestions on low budget places to stay in or around Dublin? If so I would greatly appericate any input. Thanks again in advance!!!

Have you checked out hostelworld.com? They will list Dublin Hostels and also viewer/user ratings. (You may do better to call direct for booking if hostel world says there is no availability)

I have yet to go on my trip (October) but will be staying at Avalon House. The ratings seemed very good and it was mentioned in Rick Steve's 2004 book, plus it looks interesting and is 2 min. from St Stephen's Green right at a bus stop corner.

Co-worker stayed at Kinlay House and said it was very clean but I have heard that it is a tad noisy. (I think that the major convenience on location makes it that way.) There is a hotel (Jury's I think) that shares the same courtyard with Kinlay and quite a few posters here have stayed at Jury's and said there is much noise from the Hostel next door.

Four Courts is rated as one of the top 10 hostels in all of Europe but you may not be able to get in unless you are willing to stay in a lage dorm. We were looking for an en-suite double and they book very fast. This was actually my first choice but in March, they were already booked for October for what I wanted.

Good luck, I hope this helps somewhat. Would love to know where you end up and what you thought after your trip.

Enjoy Ireland!

Dawn

12 Perfect days:

Thank you for your response. I have checked out the hostelworld web site and althought I have not yet book the specific hostel I have found it a great help! Your Awsome!!! Do you know of any sites where I can also research Bed and Breakfasts? Have you ever traveled through the countryside or do primarly stay in the larger cities? I am will be traveling with limited time on my hands as my buddy I am going with is a police officer and only has 10 days off from work. I am a teacher and my schedule is very flexible. I thought about spending a few extra days out there my self and letting him go home solo. Have you ever rented a car in Ireland or know of any good bus tours in the countryside. Thanks again for all your assistance.

The site http://www.bugeurope.com has numerous hostel reviews.

The site http://www.smoothhound.co.uk has Ireland listings for B&Bs and small places.

You can also try tripadvisor.com for review of B&Bs. I found all but one of my selections there. I also was guided by Rick Steves and ended up booking at Jury's; prices better fit my budget.

Hi Survfan,
Sorry about the delay in my reply, I was out of town and have just gotten back tonight.

First, let me clarify...when I mentioned that I had yet to go on my trip, I actually meant my FIRST trip to Ireland.

I am addicted to travel, have a strict budget and being very much a type A personality love the travel research as well.

I started my research with Rick Steves, went to the library and checked out Frommers, Fodors, Let's Go, Lonely Planet and the Ireland $80 a day book.

irelandexpert.com and here seem to have the most info. and alot of people willing to help one another (read the trip reports too!) Between all of this
I was able to make much more informed decisions.

As for the car rental...from what I understand, you may do better on the bus or bus and train mixed if you are traveling solo, although irelandexpert has a Dan Dooley car rental "coupon" really inexpensive if you can drive a manual transmission.

There is quite a bit of info on car rental and insurance on this board. Any words you type in the subject box, then highlight Ireland and posts with those key words will appear.

As for the B&B's, I really used most of the posts here and what was mentioned most often and then tripadvisor.com

There is so much overwhelming B&B info booksand sites that post a gazillion B&B's in Ireland that I found it confusing and sometimes was concerned about paid advertising. The books seem to list quite a few, but how will 3 stars and 6 sentences tell me which one I want? If six trip reports mention enjoing a stay in a particular B&B then I check their website, add it to my favorites and compare later.

Good luck...let me know how it goes!

Survfan,

Kinlay is a good location and fine to walk back at night. I have not seen the inside but It is a good location. It dopes NOT share a courtyard with Jurys but is down the street a short distance from it so either place should not effect eachother noise wise other than the possibility of rush hour traffic.

Four courts I know nothing about other than the location is on the river a bit further out than Kinlay house. I would be careful late at night i.e. 3am but its literally a few minutes in a taxi from town.
