Anyone Have an Update on Akrotiri's status in Santorini

Hi:

I was wondering if anyone knew whether or not the Akrotiri site in Santorini had yet re-opened or if there were any plans that have been published. The last posts date back to May of last year saying it was likely closed for 2006. We will be there in May.

Thanks

Dave

Just piggybacking this post. I'm also going to be in Santorini in May and seeing Akrotiri is big on my list of must sees.

I read somewhere recently (don't remember where) that it was going to be reopened sometime in 2007 but there was no exact date. From what I've observed about "Greek Time" I advise you to have hope but don't make plans based on the construction being finished.

My understanding is that Akrotiri will be closed through the 2007 summer season.

"Greek time." Hmm. Is that kind of like "Indian time" or "Mexican time"?

Topping this... I'm going to be in Santorini for May 2007 as well and I'd love to see Akrotiri and I was hoping that the renovations (or at least part of it) would be completed by then.

*fingers crossed*

Thanks Brotherleelove. We'll all keep our fingers crossed. The bright side - if it isn't open again we'll just have to include Santorini on our list again some day. (Like that would be such a hardship!)

and...

"I'll let you know tomorrow"...

I liked that one. I wish, most days, that I could live my life on Greek time!

See my other post, "Akrotiri Reopening". According to the UK branch of Thera Foundation, it doesn't look promising for an early reopening.

Yes, Heimdall, that is exactly the information we got from our friends in Santorini -- that Akrotiri WILL NOT be open in 2007. Thanks for the "official" confirmation.

PS: My point about the term "greek time" is that it is both rude and inaccurate.

I received this email today:

"Unfortunately, we cannot predict when the site at Akrotiri, Santorini, will open again for the public.
Best regards,
Christos Doumas
Director of the Excavation"
