Anyone ever used Placestostay.com?

I'm just wanting to ensure this site is legit.

I think the site is legit, but I had a terrible time when I used them! I booked a room in Scottsdale, AZ, and later that day found an amazing rate at an ever nicer resort. Trying to chancel the reservation with Placestostay.com proved impossible. And when I called the hotel directly to be sure the rez was cancelled and that I would not be billed, they indicated they had no reservation in my name, that I would need to deal with the person who made the reservation. I'm sorry to report that the hotel did indeed charge me for one night's lodging, and that Placestostay was completely unhelpful in sorting out the situation. I ultimately had to go through my credit card issuer and even that took about 6 months to resolve. I never did get the entire night's lodging refunded.

I would NOT recommend using that web site unless you are POSITIVE that you are going to keep the room and make no changes of any kind. Good luck!

Thanks. Actually, my story is that I checked them for a hotel rate and they are showing a cheaper rate than any other site I can find that mentions that location. I was/am suspicious.

cch1, I have compared prices there and they seem cheaper, in the hotel list, until you actually try to book a room and put in "2" adults and the price jumps up. So, even if you put in "2" adults at the beginning the initial rates you get back are only for 1 adults.

Good catch Mariarosa! That explains it. I hadn't carried the price check to the next step. That must be the "vig".

Has anyone used the PlacesToStay.com site recently? I found that the hotel I want to stay at in Rome is 20 Euros/night cheaper if booked through this site, as opposed to the rate I booked through email. But I wonder if the hotel would penalize me in some way if I were to cancel my reservation and then make it again through this site? An extra 100 Euros would certainly be nice.

I used it all the time from 2001 - 2003 while I was living in Europe. I never had a problem and always got interesting places to stay. I never tried cancelling with them however.

What I mean is that I'd have to cancel my original reservation booked by email. I wouldn't cancel the PlacesToStay.com reservation. Glad to hear of your positive experience.

I did note there is a 15% cancellation charge if I book through PlacesToStay.com and then cancel.
