Anyone ever seen the Pantheon?

hotel, that is? Small hotel - 20 rooms - on Via Pastini.

We have been looking for a smallish 4 star near the Pantheon, so this may be it, but anyone know anything? Sole al Pantheon we finally ruled out - too pricey.

Chiara is our second choice, larger than we want, and really wanted a 4 star.

We liked the Nazionale, and Colonna, but again, can't find much, and they are larger. Nazionale seems a better bet than the Colonna - maybe a little nicer. Heard it is more of a "business" hotel, and Colonna seems more of a tour group hotel.

Would appreciate comments on any of these hotels (no others - please!!!), especially the Pantheon Hotel. I'd love their email if anyone has it - not on their web site.

I've stayed at the Sole, the Nazionale, and the Pantheon. If you're going to Rome to try to get away from tour groups and "experience Italy" then don't go. As much as I love Rome ( I live in Vicenza), it's not the place to go to be super picky. Pantheon is nice but the area is noisy. Want quiet? The Vatican is just over the river...want small? Antica Locanda rents rooms... now that's the real Italian experience...

You'd probably love the Hotel Raphael. I don't know if it has a website, but you can try.

BTW, when we were at the Colonna in February, we were the only Americans. The other guests were all Europeans--French, Swiss, Scandinavian and German. We didn't see any tour groups when we were there.

Steffanie:
We are not trying to be super picky - we are only trying define as much as possible so that others like you can help us to find a hotel that is right for us, as not knowing Rome, that is very difficult. Sure there are tour books, but who knows what the motivation of the writer is - i.e. payment for the listings, as so we try to rely on personal experiences of people who have been to the hotels we are interested in, like you.

Unlike some people who believe that all you need is a clean room and a good mattress, we believe as others do that the right hotel can add significantly to the experience of your trip.

Since you have stayed at 3 of the hotels we are interested in, we would be very interested in your comments on those. I believe that is all others on this board are looking for as well - to read the impressions of the hotels from others, so they can form an opinion and make a choice.

I am staying at the Hotel Pantheon in May. Stephanie you say it's noisy. How bad? Should I request rooms at the back of the hotel versus the street side?

The Nazionale was elegant. Very Upper class but not the down home Italy I wanted. The Sole was actually my favorite because of it's history. It is pricey though. I haven't stayed at the Colonna but have friends that have. I as told that it's nice but lots of German tour groups when they were there. The Raphael in P. Navona was my favorite of all the hotels. We had great service, got good advice about where to eat and what to see, and it's a beautiful hotel. Hotel Pantheon we just couldn't get to sleep in (I can sleep through almost anything). Ok,so I've done the nice hotel thing. I realized (after my fifth trip to Rome) that I was hanging with a bunch of Americans the whole time and I wasn't really seeing Italy. I also realized that I was paying too much for rooms I was spending about 7 hours in. Unless it's your honeymoon you're not hanging out in your room. A clean room with a bathroom, to me,is an ok thing. NOw when I go to Rome, I stay in a room in an apartment building about 100 yds from the trevi fountain. It's quiet at night but I can open my window and people watch at about 5pm...or I can listen to the mandolin around dinner time at the cafe outside...for breakfast there's a cafe across the alley from the apartment's front door...they serve fresh croissants, fruit, and espressos....now that's real Italy... have fun....

Stephanie-
Can you tell me more about this apartment you like so much? We are going with 2 teens and would like a nice hotel with bathroom but do not need fancy. This sounds perfect.
thanks
