Anyone else having trouble with this site???

I have been having LOTS of trouble with this site lately - won't load, keeps erroring out.

At first I thought it was my computer, but this is a brand new computer, and still the same problems.

Then I thought maybe it was my broadband cable provider getting logjammed, but other sites are fine.

Maybe it's all those darn annoying pop-ups they've added that there's no way to close that's causing all the problems!!

Actually there is a way to stop those annoying pop-ups. I wish I could tell you what it is but my son did it for me and I have no idea what he did. But it works great, I never get any at home. But today at work (not that I go on Fodors travel talk at work) they were all over the place. I could probably get the computer geek at work to fix my computer there but then I'd have to admit what I was doing. And yes, the site is slow today for me also.

The site was down on Saturday for repairs and today, for the first time ever (at least for me), the site would either not load or it took forever. I wrote fodors and, this evening, it seems to be better.

I spoke too soon. The screen froze for 90 seconds just after I hit "Post my Reply," and the following screen never uploaded. I had to exit Safari and reload fodors. Ever since Saturday things have not been going well here.

If you could have witnessed the amount of trouble I have had just posting a reply to your message you would understand the "trouble" is with the site, not with you or your computer.

My problems with this site started 3 or 4 weeks ago and seemed to coincide with a new batch of ads. The Northwest Airlines banner (with the multi-frame jet taking off) and the insidious pop-up (only one I've ever seen here) which asks you take a poll are the ones which seem to cause the most problems with my 2 browsers. Dumping the cookies and javascript memory helps somewhat (sometimes) but there are still too many times when the screen format only partially loads, browser stops responding completely or everything is painfully slow (using DSL). No problems with other websites when this happens, just Fodors.

The page hasn't been loading on the first four or five tries, and posts are showing up on the wrong threads, or they are showing up combined, with posters' names showing but content missing, or content showing but under the wrong poster. Things like this often happen for a while after Fodors makes some "improvements." Progress.... Meanwhile there are still lost, unindexed threads that became unsearchable during one of the major "improvements" a year or two ago.

Yes, me too. It's been really slow to load for the past several weeks. Several times (other than Saturday during maintenance) the posts wouldn't load at all.

And just a few minutes ago I replied to a post and it didn't show up or bring the post to the top.

Help, Fodors, do something! And while you're at it, would you please get rid of that annoying Expedia ad that blocks all the initial posts.

Wow! I really can post a reply to this thread. I've tried others tonight where it was impossible to post. Regarding popups, install Mozilla to get rid of all of them. (mozilla.org). Haven't seen a single ad since installing it.

Interesting...I haven't had any real problems. I've always had to click on thread titles a couple of times to get them to come up, and often the threads will be in a weird font or even each line is centered, but a couple of clicks on the title and it shapes up. Will be interesting to see if this message posts easily.

Betsy Apr 26th, 2004 07:21 PM

Yep, it posted quickly with the first click, but I had to reload the page to get back to this page to post again.

My problems have been going on for several weeks. I suspected the new ads too. In addition to the problems others have mentioned, I've had problems typing here. Sometimes letters wouldn't show up or I had to pound the keyboard & I wasn't having that problem elsewhere. Right now the site is working better than it ahs in ages for me. Easy typing, fast loading.

francophile03 Apr 26th, 2004 09:46 PM

Yes, I have been having problems too. It was giving error messages today and also showed no headings or posts that were located out of sequence.

I believe it began for me with the ads (MGM Hotel for example) that are on the beginning page and then pop-up ads next.
