anyone else getting RSI?

I don't know about the rest of you, but I'm getting pretty fed up with all this extra clicking I'm having to do in our brave new fodorite world.

At the moment, I click on a thread title, then on last comment, then, if I contribute, I have to back-click about three times to get back to my list of threads. it takes for ages and I'm getting bored. not to mention my right index finger developing arthritis!

is there a better way of returning to my list of threads?

I've tried opening a new window, but that takes forever too.

anyone listening? Katie?

sorry, I just had to have a little moan.

regards, ann

simple - just click your back button. It will take right back to the spot you were in your list

annhig Mar 7th, 2009 10:39 AM

yes janis, that's what I'm doing. but for some reason, I seem to have to do it 3 times. hence my grumble!

esm Mar 7th, 2009 11:09 AM

annhig, I right click on the thread that I want to read and open in new tab. The "original" list remains and I just close the tabs after I read the posts.

What does "RSI" stand for?

my big complaint is that even after all this revamp there still isnt a edit button.

how hard can that be techs?

janisj Mar 7th, 2009 11:38 AM

jetsetj: There is a "Preview" function that works better than the old preview - The is essentially an "Edit" function.

BTW There never was an "Edit" function on the old forum - if you mean where you could change things after the fact. There was a technical glitch that allowed some folks to go back and alter things after they were posted. It was never intended to be a feature of the old boards -- but a couple of folks figured out how to do it. That glitch/loophole has been plugged up. Katie has talked about this on several threads . . . . .

I don't right click anything since I'm on a Mac. But the Back button works fine for me. Better than having to scroll back down the whole list like before.

RSI = Repetitive strain injury

adrienne Mar 7th, 2009 12:01 PM

I have to click on the back button 3 times too to get back to the list. Another complaint I have is that when I refresh the screen it returns me to the point I was at before rather than putting me at the top of the list of threads. In the old format when you refreshed you would be at the beginning.

adrienne: "<i>it returns me to the point I was at before rather than putting me at the top of the list of threads</i>"

Most of us ASKED for it to put us where we were before - NOT back at the beginning of the list. Then we can continue on w/o having to scroll all the way back to where we were.

Thanks, Momliz!

adrienne - that's my problem - my right finger is beginning to complain. sorry I didn't translate RSI.

but i don't mind being put back where I started!

Regards, Ann

adrienne Mar 8th, 2009 04:49 AM

janis - when I refresh and am put back to the middle of the thread list that means that I have to scroll to the top to see the recently posted threads. Refreshing is only needed when I've been away from the computer for a while and want to see what's new. If I want to be put back to where I was viewing, I would use the back button to exit a thread and continue browsing from the point where I left off.

ann - I'm trying to train myself to use the space bar key to go forward (screen by screen) and the shift spacebar to go back to avoid using the scroll button on my mouse. This will help with RSI. I have noticed that my left arm (my mousing arm) is beginning to ache from the scrolling.

Another thing that I'm trying to remember to do is not to continually click on the back button but to use my bookmarks (I have this forum bookmarked). That way I only need to click on bookmarks and then fodors. This is helpful (cuts down on keystrokes/scrolling) once you get deeper into the layers of posts.

Hi annhig,

That's your body's way of telling you that you are spending too long on the computer! I have that symptom, too. ;-)

annhig Mar 8th, 2009 10:27 AM

thanks adrienne - good tips.

Heimdall - that's a good point too. but it means I don't have to do other stuff!

annhig "that's a good point too. but it means I don't have to do other stuff!"
Oh, that is so true. Fiddling on the computer is my displacement activity. I can always convince myself that what I am doing at the keyboard is FAR more important than all those other mundane tasks that life throws at me :)

It seems that Mac navigation is different to Windows navigation.

I agree with adrienne about 'Refresh'. It should show you all the newest threads. That is the meaning of 'Refresh', ie, has anything changed since I last downloaded this page?

'Preview' is not really a substitute for 'Edit'. Edit is for fixing a post AFTER it has been submitted (a day later, maybe). Personally, I have never seen the point of 'Preview'. I check and correct my posts in the submission window. If I miss an error there I am as likely to miss it in the Preview window.

I scroll by dragging the scroll bar on the right up and down. I have never used the wheel on the mouse.

After posting, it takes 3 'Back' clicks to get back to the list of threads.

I like the sound of esm's method of opening a thread. I think I'm going to try it.

Is Bookmarking a Mac thing? I haven't found a way of doing it in Windows. 'Favourites' just doesn't do it for me. My current list of favourites is so long that it already takes forever to find anything. I certainly don't want to add to the list.

Ok, I've checked this, so I'm going to submit it without previewing ;)

Travelnut Mar 10th, 2009 03:28 AM

One 'back' returns me to the list after posting... weird.
I like to go down the list and use the 'open new tab' for any posts I want to read. It keeps the list available as I'm responding or whatever. I click on the 'Europe Forum' title to the top left of the screen to get a new/updated list of threads.
'Preview' is good for those who want to use colors, bolding, emoticons, etc. I think the preview text is easier to proof-read than is the typed post.

Travelnut Mar 10th, 2009 03:30 AM

OK, correction - if I post, it IS 3 clicks on the back key, IF I'm posting within the original page I opened. If I reply using one of the 'open new tab' pages, then I just close the window/tab and go back to the list.

To move up and down on a screen, you can also use the arrow keys, the home, end, and page up & down buttons on your keyboard.
