No and No.

Traveler's checks are dinosaurs. I don't pay any ATM fees on either end of the transaction.

well, I took the ATM recommendations to heart to the degree that I didn't even exchange any money. I brought U.S. dollars and decided to just leave it to spend when I get back and have been withdrawing local money just from ATMs. Seems like the banks charge commission etc. when changing money anyway so the least costly way may be via ATMs.

You got a cash advance (loan)if you used your credit card. Not savy at all.

letsgo, I don't know if you were addressing the initial OP or me.... I would certainly not use my credit card for the ATM; I am using my ATM card to withdraw the cash and my Capitol One credit card for all credit card purchases because they don't take on an international charge.
