Anyone done the Black Paris tour?

Fodors has some place listed that does a tour by foot, metro and bus on the history of Black artists and exiles in Paris -- it's 80 Euro for a 4-5 hr tour, which seems a bit high.

Has anyone done this -- what did you think? Does anyone know of similar historical tours?

anyone? I was considering just buying the Guide to Black Paris book and taking the tour solo but if someone thinks the organized tour was worth it, I'll do that.

I haven't heard of that company, but I do think that is pretty steep, also. Of course you can visit the places on your own, most of what they are seeing, I've seen on my own, although I don't know some of the less wellknown artists or writers. I've stayed in a couple of those areas where they are probably touring, so just kind of know some of those places, anyway (like in the 9th arrondisement near St Georges metro).

Sometimes guided tours can be enjoyable, though, if the guide is really good, and you can enjoy meeting others with similar interests. I found an alternative company that has been around a while and is offering similar tours for only 45 euro, which is a lot better

Thanks a lot Christina -- I didn't find this tour option when I googled Black Paris. It's by far the cheapest option so far -- there seem to be at least 3 other Black Paris tours and they all seem to charge 80E and up.

There's a plug from the SF Gate for this one with Ricki Stevenson who I believe authored the Black Paris guidebook I was considering buying.

If anyone has gone on any of these guided tours, I'd love to hear some feedback, thanks.

I thought that tour by Walking the Spirit looked very good and might want to do that myself sometime. The owner has been in Paris quite some time, also. I found that on a very good general "portal" to black Paris, which you might want to look at. They have a lot of stuff on there, including a forum. Maybe you could ask on there if anyone has taken these tours.

It's not easy to find as it's under "travel resources" from the left list, but you don't see it unless you scroll down. They have a couple other groups, including the one you named by Ricki Stevenson. They also have this one by DiscoverParis that is only US $25 but just about places Josephine Baker was in Paris (the Black Pearl Walk)

I think the Walking the Spirit ones look better. I like the intellectuals/writers one.

I stayed in a hotel for a week once that was just a few doors down from Haynes Cafe, which is known for its food and being a place a lot of Black artists/poets etc. stop in. They have live music sometimes, but it's just a hole in the wall.

Here's an article about some of these things and mentions some places in Paris, it was a few years ago in my paper
