That's the question. Has anyone been to the Palio d'Asti, the traditional festival and horse race held in Asti every year and can share with us their experiences??

Michelle - Thanks for the topping !!
I'd seen the other post on the Palio and checked out the website and decided it might make for a nice visit next year. We've been to piemonte a couple of times and enjoyed it very much. Are you interested in the Palio also?
Check out my web site. It's full of trips to Italy, including 2 to Piemonte.

Dear sssteve:
I am not particularly interested in the Palio, but my husband would love to go. My cousins went to the Palio in Siena about 10 years ago. They loved it. They really enjoyed the parties in the neighborhoods and the parades. Of course, they are party girls and single.
Good luck,
MY

Hi Steve
My daughter is heading to Asti tomorrow to meet up with a friend who is staying with an aunt in Asti. Very timely visit as she will be able to be part of the celebrations and festivities leading up to the Palio on Sunday.
I will let you know how she enjoyed it next week.

Hi Steve
Spoke with my daughter yesterday. There was a program of events in the week leading up to the Palio - wine and food festivals, markets and so on. On the Sunday there was a parade through the streets of Asti - lots of amazing costumes, flag-throwing and festivities.
For the actual horse race, they got a spot in the middle of the piazza (with thousands of others) and had a good view of the horses. It was free to stand where they were. There is also seating around the outside of the track where you can pay up to 50 euros for a seat. I think it depends if you are on the straight section (cheaper) or on the bends (more exciting and more expensive).
She loved the town of Asti - mind you this is her first week in Italy at the beginning of a 12 month working holiday, and she was staying right in the middle of Asti with her friends aunt and uncles - complete with a day of picking grapes in their vineyard.
Check out the website www.palio.asti.it - they don't have this years photos up yet, but it does give you a good overview of the festival.
