Anyone been to Karpathos? (2)

We're spontaneous travelers and would love to know if anyone can suggest self-catering places to stay on Karpathos. We know it's off the beaten track and would be interested in any experiences anyone wants to share. We'll be there from about Oct 6-17.

pook: Welcome to Fodors. the best way to do this is to add a comment to your prior thread -- not re-post w/ (2) in the title. Plus it has only been about 20 mins since your first post. Being a holiday weekend in teh State means the forum is a little slower than normal. Give it a chance.

Thanks for the tip. Actually I wasn't feeling impatient when I posted the second message; I realized (after I read the
advice for new posters) that I should have been more specific,i.e. that we were looking for a place to stay.

Karpathos is NOT off the beaten track. I went there years ago with a straight charter flight.

Thanks Elina. Not too much info about Karpathos. Did you like your visit there?

Yes, I did. And I remember a British couple I met, for them it was a "secret place". They had come by ferry from Rhodes, and really thought that it is "undiscovered". They were disappointed to find out that there were charters from all Scandinavian countries, and had been for some years already. At that time it was only from Scandinavian countries, I donīt know how it is today.

It is for people who donīt need much outward stimulation, just peaceful existence and scenery. If you go there make sure that you stay at least one night in Olympos.

Just to add: We were there in the begining of october, and that was the last week the hotel was open. They start closing down hotels and B&bīs when the charters stop for winter. But I am sure some stay open longer, and without charters you will surely find a place.

I stayed at a hotel with a kitchette with a view of the port in Pigatia and did day trips to Olympos, Leftkos and a boat excursion to a beach. If I was going at a busy time I would consider basing myself in Leftkos but in Oct. I think you would be better off in Pigatia. I can't remember the name of the hotel but I have it at home and if you want, I will look it up and post another day.
