Anybody GeoTagging their photos?
If your GPS can record a track of your movements (latitude, longitude, altitude, and date/time), you can dump out the data when you get home and run it through a program that correlates it with the time stamp on a set of photo image files. These photos with the location of the photograper in 4-space can then be displayed in a Picasa album, a Google Earth page, or uploaded to any of numerous sites like flickr.com and boringstreet.com - all of which display a map showing where the photo was shot.
When I decided that tagging my pictures would be fun, it took me about ten minutes to find a free download that would capture the GPS data to a file in my iPAQ. I'm sure glad I didn't have a dedicated GPS, because I'd probably have been out of luck. http://www.visualgps.net/VisualGPSce |
My Garmin 76CS GPS keeps very accurate information of my tracks. I'm guessing that digital cameras will soon have built in (or plug in) gps units that record precise locations of photos. Nikon already has this for their higher end camers.
Also, you might be interested in Trackstick, which is designed for Google Earth. It's pretty pricey right now but like everything else in the technology realm, it will get cheaper. www.trackstick.com |
Thanks for this info. Ya never know when I'm gonna need it so...........bookmark!

My OS is too archaic to be supported by Google Earth. :( This is what happens when one spends money on travel instead of upgrades.....
|
Huh? You can upgrade your OS to Windows XP for much less than $100 - surely you can forgo one four-star meal in Paris for the sake of running Google Earth!

Robes, my laptop is 7 years old and I'm on my third keyboard. I need more than a string and sealing wax fix soon; but I thank you for the suggestion; I may yet do it. Your enthusiasm on such things is contagious, even for someone who has become as lazy about tech stuff as yours truly.
By the way, I hope in the next 'release' of colloquial English, this 'huh' business gets deleted. |
oops, I exaggerate. It's only 6.5 years old.

Say what? :D |
Sony have a GPS device for cameras, all makes, not just their own. It comes with the software. I've thought about getting one, since I don't have or need a hand-held GPS but haven't got round to it. Hard to justify the price really when I could put the money towards a new lens or another holiday.

Since you can do GeoTagging with a Pocket PC for basically nothing, I don't see the advantage of buying another piece of equipment - from Sony or anybody else.
Can anyone explain this to me? |
