Anybody familiar with these towns in Germany?
 

Doing research for a trip and wonder if any of you have been to any of these places.

Limburg - Plan to stay here 2 nts after arriving in Frankfurt from US.
Wetzlar and Weilburg - Would do daytrips from Limburg

Wangen im Allgau - Thinking of overnighting here on the way from Lucerne to Ansbach.

Ansbach - Looked like a good place to spend a couple of nights before heading to Idstein near Frankfurt Airport. Thinking of doing a day trip to Bad Windsheim. Any other nearby possibilities?

Limburg - Bishop seat with interesting cathedral. Off the beaten tourist path, therefore less hectic. Hv stayed there opne overnight, long time ago.

Wangen is a bit off the beaten path. I wpuld probably prefer to stay in or near Lindau, at lake Costance. A nice hotel not too far from WEangen, in Lindenberg/Allgaeu is the Waldsee Hotel ( I believ I have its name right). Have stayed there a couple of times. Restaurant is a favorite of the Lindenberg native. Hotel ids loacted right at a nice lake, with swimming facilities.

Have stayed in Ansbach (as well as Bad Windsheim) as alternates to sdtsayaing in crowded Rothenburg. Both have nice old town sections. Bad Winsheim is a bit mopre compact and has good hotels. It is a spa. Although it has been a few years ago, in Ansbach we stayed in the "Am Drechselgarten" hotel, in Bad Windsheim in the Hotel am Kurpark (twice). At the time could recommend both hotels.

If you are driving from Ansbach or Windsheim to the FRA airport, I suggest driving from Rothenburg on the Romantic Highway (itself really not very romantic, but it connects the follolwing places you may want to visit en route: Creglingen (visit the altar in the Herrgottskirche), Bad Mergentheim, Wertheim (95km from Rothenburg.Then follow the Main river west for 32km to Miltenberg. Lovely old town, overlooking the Main river.You could spend the night there. We have stayed at the Jagdhotel Rose, at the western edge of the town. It is about 40km from there to the A-3 autobahn at Stockstadt on the B-469, most of the way a 4-lane highway. From Stockstadt westbound to the Frankfurt/Airport it is 32km on the A-3, a 4-plus lane autobahn.

Off the beaten path is what I am looking for.

I did look at the Hotel Waldsee and it looks nice. The old town of Wangen just looked like something we'd be interested in.

I will look at the hotels in Bad Windsheim and see if we would prefer to stay there and do Ansbach as a day trip.

We will be driving from Ansbach or Bad Windsheim to either Idstein or maybe Seligenstadt for one night before flying home out of Frankfurt Airport.

We stayed in Wertheim several years ago and visited Miltenberg as a day trip. Both were very nice. I have also been looking at Bad Mergenheim as a possible place to stay instead of Ansbach or Bad Windsheim.

There are just too many lovely places and not enough time. Thanks again for your input.

I like Seligenstadt a lot and find it very pretty, but I think I would choose Idstein to stay in. The setting in the Taunus mountains adds to the beautiful atmosphere. The Union church is being restored though and all of the ceiling paintings have been taken down. Not sure when it will be finished, but it looks like it may be 2017.

Mainhattengirl, thanks for your input. What we could do is stop in Seligenstadt for a look around before overnighting in Idstein. I looked at the Hotel Sonne in Idstein and it looks like a possibility.

The Abbey and the Abbey Gardens are very pretty in Seligenstadt and they do have a lot of fachwerk houses. A short walk along the Main is nice and you go past the ruins of the Staufen palace.

You might want to look at these hotels too in Idstein, they are a bit more central to the old town square.

Weilburg is a rare example of a complete, and completely preserved, residential town of a baroque prince and court. The town is actually much older but was redesigned within 20 years (1700 to 1720, roughly) and underwent hardly any changes ever after. If you know a bit about history and baroque architecture, Weilburg is a gem. Don't miss the church which is a top class example of Lutheran baroque - if you know a bit about protestant church architecture you'll appreciate it even more.

P.S. If you want a spooky castle ruin, consider a stop in Runkel along the way between Limburg and Weilburg/Wetzlar.

Weilburg looked great on the internet and your photos, quokka, reinforce that. It should make for a great stop. And we'll definitely look into stopping in Runkel.

Anyone else have any info on these places?

My wife's father was stationed in Ansbach, so we spent a night there in 2006 and visited the residence. It was a pleasant stop but I am not sure that I would devote two days to it. I might also prefer visiting a couple wine villages on the Main: Ochsenfurt and Marktbreit. If I remember correctly, you have already visited Iphofen?

I have Limburg on my to-do list. I did notice that it is only a 30 minute train ride for a day trip from Idstein (often recommended by Jo). I may visit them both next spring.

Thanks, Gary. Yes, we spent a couple of nights in Iphofen several years ago and did day trips from there but we didn't get to Ochsenfurt and Markbreit. So, something to think about.

We were thinking of using Ansbach as a base to visit a couple of other towns nearby since we hadn't been there before. But it is a little larger than what we like.

We just want a nice stop for a couple of days somewhere between either Lucerne or perhaps Bodensee (haven't decided for sure) and Frankfurt before we come home. Don't want to drive more than 3 to 4 hours in one day, however, if we can help it, thus the intermediate stop in Wangen im Allgau.

Always open to ideas for other interesting places to stop or visit.
