Anybody Ever Been To the Casino in Venice?
 

Just wondering if anyone has ever been to the casino in Venice and how it was.

Four more sleeps and we are off....and given the time right now, obviously I can not sleep!

Hi Dejais, haven't been to the Casino in Venice, but have a beautiful trip to Italy. I understand your excitment and not being able to sleep. But try to! Heavens know you probably won't get much sleep on the flight to Italy.

Been to the casino, its on the lido and not worth the effort....as like many Euro casinos its quiet and stiff.

Yes - we've been to the casino. It's for tourists only - you need your pasport to get in - since they don;t want Italians gambling away all their money. When we went there was an admission charge. The gambling was quite serious - and proper dress was de rigeur.

This is not Atlantic City - with people betting the rent money - nor is it Las Vegas - all neon lights, loud noises and waitresses with huge fake boobs. Quite subdued - and high stakes in general (did not see any one-armed bandits - only table games).

I'm sorry I may just be confused with my bearings.
But, whenever we're in Venice (latest was April last year), I always seem to notice that, while on the vaporetto, the casino is on a palazzo on the right hand bank of the Grand Canal about 5-10 minutes after leaving the train station area - somewhere near or in the Canarregio area.

Is this the lido?

Oooops - in my previous post, I meant to say I noticed that it was on the LEFT side bank of the Grand Canal (after leaving the train station on a vaporetto) where I noticed a huge sign "Casino".

Would this be the Venice casino?

There's a casino in the Lido, and a casino near the San Marcuola vaporetto stop in Cannaregio. They are open at different times of year (I think the Lido one is closed during the winter).

Billy, the Lido is an outer island of Venice and is not near the train station or Grand Canal. It is farther out and can be accessed by vaporetto about five or ten minutes past the end of the Grand Canal.

With the all the numerous times that I've spent in Venice, without having ever been to Lido nor the Casino, it threw me off that I always see a large "Casino" sign at a palazzo along the Grand Canal in Cannareggio every time I pass by on the vaporetto.

The summer casino on the Lido has been closed for several years now and the "winter" casino--the one with the big sign along the Grand Canal is open all year. It's really quite grand and I'd say well worth a visit. You would not have to do any wagering if you just wanted to look around and soak up some ambience! The new casino out by the airport is supposedly not worth the trip.

The hotel I stayed at (La Forcola) offers free entry to the casino in Cannaregio. I didn't take advantage of this. I did note that it specifically stated that proper footwear is required (I don't remember the exact wording, but I think it was clear that sneakers were right out.)

You mean you like the ear-splitting, jangling noise, the flashing lights and the general air of being in a madhouse that you find in casinos in the US?
