Anybody been to Davos?

I am curious. The World Economic Forum is taking place there this week (Clinton, Arafat, Putin, etc....). Isn't that a really small village in the Swiss Alps?

Maira: Actually Davos is town of roughly 13'000 inhabitants featuring a convention center which must be among the top five in Switzerland.

The town is built along two very busy main streets and stretched over three miles. There is a small lake at the north end of the buiilt up area. Architecture is mainly mediocre with a few interesting buildings scattered here and there.

Davos is the end of a main rail line winding up from Chur, nearest airport is Zurich and it is accessible by a rather narrow main road.

And no, Davos is not really a typical Swiss village. The place is rather ugly and reminds you of a small industrial town giving itself airs. There are, however, many beautiful villages just outside the place and the landscape is marvellous.

Go and have a look for yourself, outside the World Economic Forum, you will be very welcome.

Phil.

Phil---thanks for the info. Not sure I would go out of my way to visit, but if in the neighborhood, then it will be good to know what to expect.

Thanks again.

Davos became famous for its sanatoriums in the first decades of the 1900s. Patients came from all over the world to be treated for lung diseases, TB in particular.

If you are a skier, you will delight in skiing the Parsenn. Some of the ski-
runs end 6000ft below their starting points. You could stay in Klosters instead of Davos. The skating rink is reputed to be the largest in Europe. There is a great walk "Hohe Promenade" - l hr on foot RT - which is kept clear from snow in the winter and overlooks Davos Platz and Davos Dorf. The beauty of Davos is in the surroundings rather than the town itself.

Yes- 2 weeks at Christmas and New Years. I can not say a negative thing about my experience- the skiing was fantastic. It snowed almost the entire time I was there, and it was a real adventure for me. This was my first time in Switzerland, I can not comment on the architecture, I am sure there are many fine places in the country to see.
