Any trains from Varenna to Milan on Sundays?

We plan to travel down to Milan on a Sunday. I checked the schedule but cant seem to extract the information from the Trenitalia website. Fingers crossed there will be trains running from Varenna to Milan on Sundays. Does anyone know?

If that's Varenna - Esino there are several (just over an hour to Milano Centrale) for this coming Sunday according to the bahn.de site.

It is a Regionale train. The summer schedule for dates after mid-June has not yet been added to Trenitalia.com. You can get a good idea of schedule by inquiring about trains for this coming Sunday.

Sunday may be the least convenient day to do what you want to do. Weekend schedules for ferries and trains offer fewer possibilities. Have you looked at the ferry schedules yet? Have you figured out how to decipher the schedule?

There is no need to get fingers crossed.

You can find out the boat schedule at: http://www.navigazionelaghi.it/file/...o_estate11.pdf

You can find out the train schedule as mentioned above.

What is not certain is how you get your train tickets. You were leaning towards getting them from a travel agent in Varenna which may not be open at the time you are in Varenna. Either count on using the vending machine or get them before you get to Bellagio. Won't you be using a train some point before getting to Bellagio?

The Varenna Esino train to Milano Centrale schedule for Sundays in June is:

7:37 - 8:40
8:37 - 9:40
10:37 - 11:40
12:37 - 13:40
14:37 - 15:40

To view ferries from Bellagio to Varenna, you need to view several schedules; Como-Colico, Bellagio-Lecco, and the Car Ferry. I don't think the mid-lake shuttle runs on weekends. The schedule for Sundays in June is:

7:35 (Car Ferry)
8:00 (Car Ferry)
8:50 (Car Ferry)
10:00 (Car Ferry)
10:50 (Car Ferry)
The car ferry boats don't list their arrival times in Varenna but you can probably assume the ride is about 16 minutes. Or cross-reference the Depart Varenna schedule to compare.
11:21 - 11:37 (Passenger Ferry)
11:45 - 11:57 (Passenger Ferry)
12:05 - 12:30 (Passenger Ferry, stops first in Mennaggio)
12:40 - 12:57 (Passenger Ferry)

If you want to get to Milan in the morning, it seems the car ferry is your only choice. If you take the 7:35 Car Ferry from Bellagio, you should have 35 minutes to meander to Varenna's train station to catch the 8:37 train. As for tickets, check at the Airport 2000 ticket booth outside of Baggage Claim at Malpensa. Sometimes the agent speaks decent English. Otherwise, visit the travel agent in Bellagio before Sunday. Assume all things are closed on Sundays unless you discover otherwise.

We took a train from Varenna to Milan on Sunday last October.

Just be aware there is no ticket office at the Varenna train station. You'll have to buy your ticket ahead of time in Bellagio at IC travel agency or the travel agency in Varenna.
They are not open on Sunday. On Sunday morning, the bar on the way to the train station sells tickets to Milan.

Good luck and have a great trip!

2 ways to do it

Easiest to shoot over to Como

on a fast ferry then Milano Centrale

Regionale via Lecco more hassle longer cheaper

Have done it both ways go via Como it is best.

<i>"Easiest to shoot over to Como on a fast ferry"</i>

I disagree. The closest train station to the Como ferry dock is Como Nord. The walk is about 10 minutes from the boat (no hills). The fast ferry takes one hour and it rarely runs on time. The direct train from Como to Centrale takes 1 hour and 23 minutes. Depending on connection time, you could easily add 2 hours of travel time taking this route, making the trip almost 4 hrs.

From the Varenna train station, the train ride is barely an hour. The ferry from Bellagio to Varenna is 16 minutes. If you time it right, your travel time could be as little as 2 hours. Bellagio to Varenna is prettier. The train ride to Lecco is prettier. The remaining 40 minutes goes by quickly. Presto, you're in Milan.

The schedule for this Sunday from Como S. Giovanni (about a 10 minute walk from the ferry dock) is leave 10:17, arrive Milano Centrale at 10:50, or leave 11:17, arrive Centrale at 11:50, both trips taking 33 minutes from Como.

Hello, first time in these forums.
I'm planning a trip to Como in September. It's a Sunday and my intention is to take the train at Milano Nord to Como Lago. Then a ferry to Bellagio spend a few hours there, have lunch and then take the ferry to Varenna to catch a late-afternoon train to Milano Centrale which is very close to our hotel. My question is: if the travel Agency in Varenna is closed on Sundays, is it possible to buy my return ticket at the Milano Nord station that same morning? Even if my final destination is Milano Centrale? Is it worth to buy it with anticipation through the trenitalia website, or is it easy to buy them directly at the station?
Thank you so much in advance guys!

No. These are R tickets (slow trains - no reserved seating) and there is no point to buying in advance as there are no discounts and they don't sell out. Be sure to validate your ticket in the yellow machine before boarding.

Just wanted to thank all for your advice. We had a great time in Bellagio. Now to help Freshy.

The agency in Varenna is closed on Sunday. We bought ours from the travel agency on Saturday but we were told you can also purchase them on the train from the conductor. We did see someone buying tickets so I guess it's ok and you shouldnt have to pay the extra Euro 10 because there isnt a ticketing office at Varenna.

Your trip from Milan/Como/Bellagio/Varenna is too ambitious and you'll end up travelling so much you'll not have time to digest and enjoy the beauty around. Best to start your day from Como or Bellagio and visit the mid-lake area eg: Menaggio, Bellagio. Theses towns are very pretty and if you do walk through the hilly aisles, you will need more time.

Having said that, if you dont have enough time and can only do Milan/Como/Bellagio/Varenna/Milan, I suggest you start very early but do be prepared for a tiring trip. Milan to Como is about an hour. Suggest you take the long boat ride so you get to enjoy the lake. Give yourself about 2 hours to enjoy Bellagio before heading to Menaggio (which we thought was also very pretty) and finally to Varenna to take your train back.

Hope this helps

Hi Travellin_family! Thanks for your advice! Coincidentally that's precisely what I'd like to do. Take the long boat ride, enjoy the beautiful scenery and just relax and have a delicious meal in Bellagio. I imagine Varenna is also very pretty but will hardly have any time left to visit except on the surface. That train will leave us practically at our hotel front door. In the end I have decided to take an early train departing from Milano Centrale to Como S. Giovanni. The ride is shorter, only 33 minutes. Do you guys think I can buy my return tickets from Varenna at the Central Station that same morning?
Thank you all for your help!

Not so sure about that but I'm sure you can. All I've found out is if you buy tickets on the train, you'll have to pay Euro10 extra (not sure if it's per person or just a once off admin fee)
If it's still a Sunday, you should be able to buy it on the train and you shouldnt have to pay Euro 10 because the ticketing office if not available. You'll need a local to advise on this I'm afraid. Best to check with your hotel concierge when you get there.

If you are talking about the central station in Milan, yes. Use the kiosks which have touch screen in English. There are step-by-step instructions on this link with screen picture of each step. Scroll down to how to buy tickets at a kiosk. The pictures are a kiosk in Rome so Rome Termini is preselected on the departure screen. Since you will be in Milan, Milan will be preselected. You change it at the bottom of the screen by selecting other departure and then selecting Varenna. Typically, there are rows of kiosks that accept credit cards and others that are cash only (they will be marked with a sign usually).

Don't forget that R tickets must be validated (usually trackside, but sometimes inside the station - look for yellow machine) before departure.

First off, thank you all for the wonderful information in this continuing "post".

I will be traveling from Bellagio to Milan on Sunday April 14, 2013. I was thinking of taking a bus from Bellagio to Como and train to Milan.

It has been suggested that I take a boat from Bellagio to Varenna, then the train from Varenna to Milan. Is this still a good idea? Boats running on Sunday? Trains still going from Varenna to Milan (Central).

Where can I find the: Bus schedule? Train schedule? Boat Schedule?

Where do you get bus tickets? Boat tickets? Train tickets? Remember I am traveling on a Sunday.

Thanks for your help.
