Any suggestions for a vineyard to stay at in the Chianti region?

We're looking for a farm that has a vineyard, relatively centrally located in the Chianti region (so that you can make easy day trips to the towns in Tuscany), amazing views, good food, and great hospitality. Any suggestions? We've been all over tripadvisor, but it's so hard to weed out only places that have their own vineyard.

"... so that you can make easy day trips to the towns in Tuscany..."

Which towns in Tuscany? IMO, if it must be Chianti, I would look in the southern part of the area. Also IMO, the 'better' wine is farther south, near Montalcino/Montepulciano, or in the Maremma area. If it's less about wine and proximity to the rest of Tuscany, then just look for the best reviews. Google vineyard stays in Tuscany to get started, then look to Tripadvisor and other sites for reviews. Have a map of the area and check driving times to other towns.

How many days will you stay there?

Hey kybourbon - Have you ever been here? I have it on my list as a "to do" for the afternoon with the kids while we are in Tavarnelle in August. The pools look awesome. Have you eaten here?

Here is our wine list...... I've written ROOM after those I know rent

Winetasting and winery tours

California-style wine hospitality is very rare in Italy. Most wineries are very small and usually offered tours and tastings to members of the wine trade. But that is slowly changing. Small wineries now offer direct sales (look for the sign “vendita diretta”) and usually provide tastes of wines you are interested in. Some will also offer tours of their cellars and a more formal tasting, but almost all require a reservation. Larger wineries have open tours and tastings at set times of the day. Charges vary, so it is a good idea to confirm costs when you make a reservation.

In and around Borgo di Gaiole

The view from our terrace includes two wineries. On the left is Capannelle, owned by the owners of the Orient Express. Along the hillside to the right of Capannelle, behind a line of cypress trees, is Riecine.

Riecine, small winery with great wines. www.riecine.it Tel 0577-749098
Capannelle, they have an upscale tour & tasting for a fee. www.capannelle.it Tel 0577-74511 ROOMS

Castello di Brolio, one of the most historic castles in Chianti. You can get a tour of the winery cellars and the castle itself, as well as of the Ricasoli museum in the castle. www.ricasoli.it
Rocca di Montegrossi, one of our favorite Chiantis and owned by a Ricasoli, Marco. www.roccadimontegrossi.it 0577-747977

Castello d’Albola offers tours and tastings twice daily during the week www.albola.it Tel 0577-738019

Brancaia, great wines in a beautiful setting. www.brancaia.com Tel 0577-742007

In and around Castellina in Chianti

Castello di Fonterutoli is an historic Chianti winery. Until a few years ago the winery was the entire hamlet of Fonterutoli. Now they have an ultramodern, spectacular winery (unseen from the road) below the hamlet. You can do a tasting in the original tasting room off the road between Castellina and Siena. If you can get a tour of the winery, it’s worth it. www.fonterutoli.it Tel 0577-73571
Castellare in Chianti, a beautiful old winery (especially the Vin Santo room). www.castellare.it Tel 0577-742093
Castello di Monsanto, perhaps our favorite “wow” tour, but reservations are a must. Wines are great, but the cellar and grounds are even better. www.castellodimonsanto.it tel 055-8059000
Casa Emma, very convenient (on the road to San Donato) and good wines as well. www.casaemma.com Tel 055-8072859

If you have time to drive a bit farther, there are some wonderful wineries in neighboring Umbria and in other areas of Tuscany besides Chianti. But undoubtedly the best wines come from the hill towns of Montalcino and Montepulciano. While en route to Montalcino we receommend stopping to see the frescoes at the Mont Oliveto abbey and while in Montalcino try to catch the Gregorian chants at the 12th century abbey in Sant’Antimo. The monks chant several times a day (go online to see the schedule) but the most convenient times are 12:45 and 2:45.

Avignonesi is the top producer of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. There main winery is between Cortona and Montepulciano. They offer a great tour that includes lunch and a tasting of their wonderful wines. www.avignonesi.it Tel 0578-724304

I didn't stay there as I always ended up staying further south. I just thought of it when you said you wanted vineyard and location. There is a review in Maitaitom's trip report long before the agriturimso had a fancy website. There's also a link there somewhere to his website for the same review, but with pictures.

Thanks for the link. Maitaitom's trip report is one of the funniest I have read in my almost 10 years on this board!
