Any reviews of the scavi tour in St. Peter's

Just confirmed reservations for this tour and was wondering what to expect and what kind of experiences others have had. I read TWENJ's review, but I'd like some Fodorite thoughts.

If you are referring to the underground tour of St. Peter's I can highly recommend it. It is a guided tour of 1st century tombs, relics, streets, etc. overwhich St. Peter's is built. If we ever get the chance we will go again. If you are claustrophobic you might be uncomfortable but it is well worth the effort. It is awesome!!

I've taken the tour twice and it's incredible.
[My Experience] I love ancient Roman history, of which this is a part.
I am also an atheist but I do believe there was a man called Jesus Christ who had disciples and a following (~120 at his death).
From what I have read, seen and heard I do believe that is where the Disciple Peter was buried. With the strong possibility that his bones are within the tomb. IMO it is the only actual physical link to the historic Jesus, which to me is pretty awe inspiring regardless of one's religious beliefs.

Are you talking about the Catacombs of Rome?

No. this isn't the catacomb tour. It is a special tour of the excavations under the vatican.

I enjoyed the tour. I found it very interesting. We also had no problem getting advance tickets and arranging our day around the tour. I will say that I was probably less excited about it then most of the people whose reviews I read prior to going on the tour. I thought it was very interesting and enjoyed our guide who was knowledgeable and passionate. I also thought it was very cool to be escorted by those decked out swiss guards into a special entrance in the Vatican. I felt like a real VIP!

However, unless you are very religious or a real ancient history buff, I would not plan your whole trip around the tour. From some of the other threads it seemed like people did that. It is definitely worth going on the tour if you get the chance though. one other thing, it can be claustrophobic but also it is very dry and dusty so if you have any respiratory problems you might want to rethink going. One woman on our tour was coughing uncontrollably the entire time.

Unfortunately I must cancel my reservation for the Scavi..I did not realize that children were not allowed and Trevor, my grandchild is 9 years old....I really wanted to go and I was so thrilled when I had my reservation comfirmed for the 20 of June...Perphas the next time, I will be able to do it...By the way, this is the second time that I had to cancel...Strange...Maybe is not my destiny to walk through Rome Ancient streets....

To give you a lay-out of the area past and present. http://www.ku.edu/history/index/euro...iani_plan.html
The bottom plan shows the Circus of Nero in relation to the old and new basilica.
After you check-in while walking to the tour entrance (~30m) look at the pavement on your left and you will see a small circular plaque. That marks the location of the obelisk which was on the spina of the Circus and is now in front of St. Peter's.
