Any Reviews of Bracchiano?

Hi! Our next trip to Italy is fast approaching. We are renting a house outside Rome and I was thinking of a day trip to Bracchiano. Has anyone been that could offer first hand reviews? We would like do some lake activities and I've read about it, but wanted some personal experiences. We will have cars (15 of us!).

Thanks!

I once did a day trip to Viterbo and Bracciano on a day trip from Rome and loved them both.

Bracciano is dominated by its famous castle where Katie Hall and Tom Cruise got hitched. The castle is dreamy and this hill town has vast views of Lake Bracciano all spread out below. I was too late to get down to the lake - being a foot tourist - by saw them plying the lake from far above.

Viterbo really surprised me - both with its ancient hilly streets and the fact that there were two towns - the lower and a steep walk away - the upper town. Got a tourist trail brochure from the tourist office in the more modern lower town and did a sweet tour of Viterbo - classic hill town.

In retrospect I would have spent a day at each place.

Cheers!

We went to Bracciano 14 years ago. It is a good castle with a nice roomful of armour. Great views of the lake.

At that time you could only tour the castle with a guide. My understanding is that's changed, but the guide did have some great stories about the people who lived there.

The town is cute. We came from Rome by train, easy to do.

I was in Bracciano 3 years ago, attending a conference held at the castle. The castle is indeed a very nice castle, with a good view over the lake. I didn't find the town very interesting. It's a bit run down.

To be fair, when we saw the town it was Christmastime and they had strung lights up across the narrow streets.

The castle is the reason to go there.

We were driving to Umbria from Rome and stopped for lunch at the nice restaurant on Lake Bracciano. The lake is beautiful and we could only take a glimpse of the castle without going inside, but loved the view. Lake Bracciano is lovely, peaceful and not crowded.

castle and lake far below are both reasons for Bracciano.
