Any recommendations on Glasgow lodging without a car?

Am taking my wife to see Glasgow but don't know the city. Anyone have input on a nice moderate place within waking distance of shopping areas and historic sights? West End looks like a long hike to and from the room? Any thoughts?

Try Malmaison for a boutique type hotel slightly away from the city centre but still only 5 minutes' walk.

It should be about £100 per double room, but they are quite sumptuous and funky with C D players and en suite bathrooms. The West End is a longish hike, but this place is not that far at all. Nearby are beautiful, historic squares.

Try Adelaide's Guest House in Bath Street. Central. En suite rooms c £40 per night. I have the phone number somewhere if you want it.

There are a bunch of hotels/guest houses round about the west end, I do actually think this is your best bet. The west End (in my opinion) is the nicest, quietest area of the city, with the beautiful university there to visit too. In terms of access to the city centre, there is nothing to worry about. The underground takes about 10 minutes and runs every 4 minutes (80p each way). There are also buses up and down the main roads, and if you want to you can walk it in half an hour.

Plenty of public transpost.Underground (oldest system in the world) train every 4 mins (take to Kelvinbridge/Hillhead/Partick) doesn't run late in the evening, plenty of buses, taxi rank in Northern half of Byres Road.

As Nigel mentioned...the Malmaison is quite convenient. I stayed there in August 1999. On the map it looked farther to the city center than it actually was. Also, the train stations are a 5-10 minute walk away. From Central Station, I took the train to Edinburgh twice for day trips. It takes around an hour.
The Malmaison is not far from Sauchiehall St. which has lots of shops, etc. I really enjoyed Glasgow (and Edinburgh and Scotland in general). The people are so friendly and helpful. You should have a wonderful time.

Lee
