Any recommendations for a hotel in Madrid? 100-125 euro per night

margb,
We stayed in Hotel Europa and would not do it again. Others may disagree (they have), but IMO you can do much better. While I think the world of Rick Steves and have gotten some great recommendations from him (even go to his travel talks in Edmunds), this was on place I'd disagree with him about (though Hostal Cardenal in Toledo made up for it!)

Artlover, not to hijack...
I know it's in the "sea of the human traffic" but I wondered what specifically you did not like about Europa. Was it very very noisy in the room?
Just wondering for my own future trips.
Have thought of staying there but have not. The staff seems more helpful than most. Was that the case?

ana maria,
Well, mostly we thought it was not as nice as most of the places we've stayed for the same price. For one, they had rubber sheets on the bed under the regular ones. Also, the room was so small, and I know that is true of many European hotels, but this one seemed especially small, and a bit worn.
Also, we had problems with the reservation--we arrived after 12 due to train problems, and even though we had given a credit card to hold the reservation, they didn't, and they took us to another hotel(it might have been Hotel Paris, not sure) for the first night, which was even less appealing than Europa, and charged the same rate.
But others have liked it, but it really felt more like a student travel hotel (infact there was a group of students while we were there--nothing against students--DD is one--but we like a bit more comfort now than when we were travelling as students).
Hope this helps.

I have a flight from Malaga to Madrid on SpanAir that arrives on a Thursday at 10:00 pm. We leave Madrid for home 7:00 am on the following Saturday. I reserved the Torrelaguna Travel lodge for 90 euro for two nights which is pretty good. The airfare was so cheap but we cannot change the flight unfortunately. Lesson learned-always pay more for the option of being able to change the flight when its just a 15 euro supplement. Anyway, now I wish that we could have a little more time in Madrid. So what I am thinking about doing is to just get the train to Madrid for 27 euro each and leave earlier in the day so that we could have almost 2 full days there. Torrelaguna involves a bus trip into the city so thats why we may stay somewhere else. These changes will involve more $$$$ or rather more euro so I still haven't made up my mind what to do.
I guess that if I do stay elsewhere, it might be at the Hotel Plaza Mayor. This seems to be the best price and in a good location .
Thanks to all for your suggestions.
