Any problem visiting Germany in August?

I've heard mention of countries in Europe "shutting down" during August as lots of folks go on holiday...is this a problem in Germany as far as scheduling a vacation there in August?

Absolutely no IME - in fact i think many Germans have July holidays as well as August.

France and Italy are two countries that vaguely fit your expectations but even then for the tourist the impact is miminimal unless you go to southern France where zillions of northern Europeans go as well.

It seems as if we (my partner and I) have been to Europe more OFTEN in August than in any other month and we have been to the UK, The Netherlands, France, Spain, Italy, Greece, Germany, Scandinavia, and Russia among other places. And, in fact, we will be in Germany, Italy, and Switzerland again THIS August.

Yes, there will be a LOT of folks on their vacations and yes I would advise you to plan as far ahead as possible particularly in securing accommodations, etc.

Is it a "problem?" No, IMO, or we wouldn't be doing it..again! Sure, there may be some restaurants (I'm thinking Paris, for example) that might be closed because THEY are on a holiday. Are some places absolutely MOBBED..yes, they can be...Neuschwanstein will be crowded for example but it is all doable and enjoyable.

Go for it..just be prepared to start making your destination decisions NOW. Does this mean you can't be flexible and spur of the moment...not at all..you can do that, too.

Have a great trip.

As Germany staggers school holidays (between June and September, with Bavaria always having the late holiday of end July to early September), the pressure from domestic tourism is spread throughout the summer months. But as August is the holiday month for most other Europeans, you will see more tourists in August.
As for things shutting down in August, this isn't normally the case in Germany and all tourist sights, shops and restaurants stay open (except some gourmet places catering mainly to corporate market).
Just ensure you book your accommodation in advance, specially for weekends.
